Bedsheets hurt my skin to touch
You pull the sheet up and your skin flares. The cloth is soft, but your body reads it as pain. A light touch can burn, sting, or feel raw.
Doctors call this allodynia, which means pain from a touch that should not hurt. The trouble sits in the nerves, not in the skin. Nights can feel worst, with nothing else to pull your mind away.
Nerves can misfire after shingles, an injury, or surgery. High blood sugar, some cancer drugs, heavy drinking, and low B12 can harm them too. A pinched nerve in the back or neck can set off one patch of skin.
When to see someone
Book a visit if this is new, if it spreads, or if it gets worse fast. Go the same day for a rash with blisters in a band or stripe, a fever, a weak arm or leg, numb private parts, or trouble peeing. Call as well if you have diabetes, or a sore on your foot that will not heal.
Below is a list of remedies long used for nerve pain, each with a grade. The grade shows how much research has looked at that remedy, not a promise about your skin. Read it as a starting point for a talk with your doctor or nurse.
