Zi Ran Tong is a mineral, not a plant. It is pyrite, a shiny rock made of iron and sulfur. English books often call it "natural copper", but it holds almost no copper.
Chinese medicine uses it after a fall, a blow or a broken bone. It is nearly always mixed into a formula with herbs that are said to move blood and ease pain. It is not a food, a vitamin or an iron supplement.
Chinese doctors have used it for about a thousand years, so its standing in the tradition is strong. Long use is not proof that it works, though; that is a separate question. We could not find published human trials of Zi Ran Tong on its own.
One more point matters before you read on. Mined rock can carry traces of lead, arsenic and cadmium, which are metals that build up in the body. That is why this page is marked as needing care.
No one has shown how Zi Ran Tong acts in the body. What follows is theory, not proven fact.
In Chinese medicine, it is said to "break blood stasis" and "knit bone". In plain words, healers used it to clear trapped, bruised blood and help broken bones join.
A modern guess is that the mineral gives small amounts of iron and trace metals that the body uses while a bone mends. Cell and animal work has looked at this idea. It has not been tested in people.
The way it is prepared may matter. The raw rock is heated until red, then dropped into vinegar. This makes it crumble and may make some of the iron easier to take up.
You will nearly always meet it as a grey powder inside a mixed formula. On its own it is sold in a few forms.
Crushed raw mineral: coarse grit, cooked in water with other herbs.
Calcined and vinegar-quenched powder: heated, dropped in vinegar, then ground. This is the usual medicinal form.
Fine powder in capsules or pills.
Patent formulas for bruises and breaks, sold as pills, powders or plasters.
Some plasters and liniments hold it for use on the skin. Do not put any of these on broken skin or an open wound.
Zi Ran Tong was named in Chinese herb books about a thousand years ago, in the Song era. Bone-setters took it up quickly.
It became a fixed part of "die da" medicine, the branch of Chinese practice that treats falls, blows and broken bones. Martial arts schools kept their own die da recipes, and many hold this mineral.
Classic texts warn against long use and say to stop once the injury has healed. That caution is a thousand years old and still sound.
See a doctor the same day if pain after an injury gets worse, the limb looks bent or out of shape, the skin over it is numb, cold or pale, or you cannot use it at all. Get urgent help if a bone breaks the skin.
Stop the mineral and book an appointment if you get lasting stomach pain, ongoing sickness, black stools that are not explained by the iron, deep tiredness, weak or tingling hands and feet, or trouble thinking clearly. These can be signs of metal build-up.
Also call your doctor if a break is not healing on schedule. That needs an x-ray, not a stronger powder.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
