Yu Yu Liang

A long-standing staple of Chinese mineral medicine for chronic diarrhoea, but human trial evidence is essentially absent.

Home

What is Yu Yu Liang? Yu Yu Liang is a mineral used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is limonite, a soft brown iron ore. Practitioners crush it to powder and use it as a drying, binding remedy. Its classic use is for diarrhoea that has gone on for a long time. It is also used for heavy or ongoing bleeding from the womb and for vaginal discharge. It is a single mineral herb, but it is almost always used inside a mixed formula. The honest evidence picture is thin. We found no controlled human trials of this mineral. Long traditional use tells you it has been valued for centuries, but it is not proof that it works. How does Yu Yu Liang work? Nobody has shown clearly how Yu Yu Liang acts in the body. In TCM theory it is heavy and astringent, meaning drying and binding. It is said to hold the bowel closed and stop leakage. In chemical terms it is mostly iron oxide, the same family as rust, mixed with clay minerals. Clay minerals can soak up water and bind some toxins in test tubes. That work was done on clays in general, not on this mineral in people. Whether any of this happens in the human gut has not been tested. Treat the mechanism as an idea, not a finding. What forms does Yu Yu Liang come in? You will mostly meet Yu Yu Liang as a fine grey-brown powder, or as raw mineral lumps. It is often calcined (heated red-hot) and then quenched in vinegar. This softens the mineral so it can be crushed and boiled. It is rarely taken on its own. Most products are mixed formulas sold as granules, pills, or a decoction (a boiled water extract). In a decoction it is usually tied in a cloth bag and boiled first, before the plant herbs go in. Where it comes from: Yu Yu Liang appears in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, a Chinese herbal text from around 200 CE. It sits in the mineral section of the classic drug lists. The name means roughly "Yu's surplus grain", from an old legend about Emperor Yu. It is best known inside the formula Chi Shi Zhi Yu Yu Liang Tang, from the Shang Han Lun. That formula was written for diarrhoea that would not stop.

Helps

What does Yu Yu Liang help with? Long-lasting diarrhoea: This is the main classic use. Chinese texts use it for watery stool that has run on for weeks and has no fever with it. There are no controlled human trials to check this. It is not meant for sudden diarrhoea with fever or blood. Chronic loose stool after illness: Traditional use only. It is added to warming, strengthening formulas when the bowel stays loose after a long illness. No trial evidence supports this in people. Heavy or ongoing bleeding from the womb: Old texts list it for heavy periods and bleeding between periods. This use has not been tested in trials. Heavy or unexplained bleeding needs a doctor's assessment first, not a herb. Ongoing vaginal discharge: Classic texts use it for thin, watery, long-running discharge. Evidence is traditional only. Discharge with odour, itch or pain points to an infection and needs medical care.

Where it comes from:

Who should avoid Yu Yu Liang?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant: this ban is absolute
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding
  • Do not use if you are treating a child
  • Do not use if you have haemochromatosis (a disease where the body stores too much iron) or thalassaemia (an inherited blood disorder)
  • Do not use if you have diarrhoea with fever, blood or mucus in the stool
  • Do not use if you are constipated or have a blocked bowel

  • Do not use if you take a daily prescription medicine by mouth, until a pharmacist has checked the timing

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than two days, or if you see blood in the stool. Get help the same day for a fever, severe stomach pain, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness, dry mouth or very little urine.

See a doctor for any heavy or unexplained bleeding from the womb, rather than treating it yourself. Stop the mineral and seek advice if stools turn black and tarry, if you feel very tired, or if your skin or eyes look yellow.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
