Hua Rui Shi

Traditional tier T2, a long-standing staple of Chinese medicine; evidence grade insufficient, with no human trials found.

Home

What is Hua Rui Shi? Hua Rui Shi is a mineral used in Chinese medicine. Its other name is Ophicalcite. It is a rock made of chalky white stone mixed with green serpentine stone. It is used as a single drug, not as a blend. Old texts use it to stop bleeding. Healers grind it to powder, dust it on wounds, or give small amounts by mouth. The proof is thin. We found no human trials of this mineral. It has a long record of use in one tradition, but use over time is not the same as proof that it works. How does Hua Rui Shi work? No one has shown how this rock acts in the body. The ideas below come from tradition and from guesswork, not from trials. The old idea is simple. The powder is dry and soaks up fluid. On a cut, a dry powder may help a clot form and hold. Chinese medicine says it stops bleeding and moves stuck blood. That is a theory from within that system. It has not been tested in people, so treat it as untested. What forms does Hua Rui Shi come in? It comes as a raw stone, as a fine ground powder, and as a calcined powder (the stone is baked in a fire first, then crushed). Some shops sell it inside ready-made Chinese formulas. For drinks, the crushed rock is boiled in a cloth bag so grit stays out of the cup. For skin use, the fine powder is dusted straight onto a small cut. Quality varies a lot. Ask the seller for a test report for lead, arsenic and other metals before you buy. Where it comes from: Hua Rui Shi is listed in Chinese drug books from the Song era, about a thousand years ago. It has stayed in use since then, mostly as a bleeding remedy. It is best known inside a classic powder that pairs it with San Qi for coughing or vomiting blood. Army and folk healers also kept it as a wound dust. So its standing in tradition is strong. Its standing in modern testing is close to empty.

Helps

What does Hua Rui Shi help with? Small cuts and grazes that are still bleeding: This is the most common old use. The dry powder is dusted on the cut to help it clot. No human trial has tested this, so we cannot say it beats simple pressure with a clean cloth. Deep, dirty or large wounds need a doctor, not a powder. Nosebleed: Old texts blow a little powder into the nose to stop the flow. There is no trial evidence for this. Pinching the soft part of the nose for ten minutes is the tested first step. Coughing up or vomiting blood: Classic Chinese texts pair it with San Qi for this. Blood from the lungs or stomach can point to a serious illness. Treat it as a reason to get medical help the same day, not a reason to try a home powder. Heavy or long menstrual bleeding: Tradition uses it for heavy or drawn-out bleeding. No human trial supports this. Heavy periods have many causes, some of them treatable, so ask a doctor to look for the cause. Bleeding after childbirth: Old texts list this use. We do not recommend it. Bleeding after birth can turn dangerous fast and needs urgent hospital care. Blood in the stool: Listed in tradition as a bleeding sign it may help. Blood in the stool can be a sign of a serious bowel problem. Get it checked before you try anything for it. Bruising and swelling after a knock: The mineral is said to move stuck blood, so it appears in trauma formulas. This rests on tradition alone. Ice, rest and time are the tested steps for a simple bruise.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Hua Rui Shi need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Hua Rui Shi?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby or child, unless a doctor has told you to.
  • Do not use if you take digoxin (a heart drug), because extra calcium can upset the heart's rhythm.
  • Do not use if you take warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel or any other blood thinner, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or have been told your blood calcium is high.
  • Do not use if you have a bleeding problem, such as haemophilia (a blood clotting disorder), that has not been checked by a doctor.
  • Do not use if you have a deep, dirty, gaping or heavily bleeding wound — get medical care instead.
  • Do not use if you have a long-term lung disease such as COPD (a long-term lung disease) or asthma and the product is a loose dust you could breathe in.
  • Do not use if you cannot get a test report showing the batch was checked for lead, arsenic and other metals.
  • Do not use if you are bleeding after childbirth: this needs urgent hospital care, never a home powder.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you cough up or vomit blood, pass black or bloody stools, or bleed from the back passage.

Go to an emergency department if bleeding will not stop after ten minutes of firm pressure, if blood soaks through a dressing, or if the person feels faint, cold, sweaty or confused.

Also call your doctor if you feel very thirsty, sick, weak or muddled after taking this by mouth, as these can be signs of too much calcium in the blood. Tell any doctor or pharmacist that you have used it, because it changes how some medicines are absorbed.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
