Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang

A long-standing staple of Chinese trauma practice, but human trial evidence is too thin and too weak to judge.

What is Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang? Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang is a traditional Chinese herbal formula. Its name is often given in English as Revive Health by Invigorating the Blood Decoction. It is one fixed, named formula, not a herb you buy on its own. It is used after a fall, a blow or a crash. The old texts give it for pain in the chest and side that will not settle after an injury. Chinese medicine doctors still use it for bruising, sprains and sore, stiff areas. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. The human trial evidence for this formula is thin and weak. Please keep that in mind as you read the rest of this page. How does Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang work? Short answer: no one has shown how it works in the body. In Chinese medicine, a blow is thought to leave blood "stuck" in one place. The formula is said to move that stuck blood, clear it, and ease pain and swelling. That is a traditional idea, not a tested one. Lab and animal work gives a few hints. Safflower and peach kernel may slow blood clotting. Rhubarb root works on the bowel and can cause loose stools. None of that has been shown to speed healing in people. Treat the mechanism as unproven. What forms does Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang come in? Most often it is taken as a decoction (a strong tea made by boiling the raw herbs in water). It also comes as granules that you stir into hot water, and as pills or capsules made from a dried extract. Strength varies a lot between makers, so one brand can be much stronger than another. Buy from a supplier that tests each batch for heavy metals such as lead, and for hidden drugs. Where it comes from: The formula first appears in Yi Xue Fa Ming (Clarifying the Study of Medicine), written by Li Dong-yuan around 1231, in the Jin dynasty. It was written for pain in the chest and side after a fall or a blow. It has stayed in use in Chinese trauma and bone-setting practice ever since, which gives it a long record in one tradition.

Helps

What does Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang help with? Bruising after a knock or fall: This is the main traditional use. Chinese medicine doctors give it in the first days after a blow to help bruising fade. We could not find good human trials that test this against a dummy treatment. Chest and rib pain after an injury: This is the exact use named in the 13th-century source text. Tradition here is strong. Trial evidence is not: no well-reported study in people supports it. Sprains and strains: Widely used in Chinese sports and bone-setting clinics for a twisted ankle or wrist. Evidence is based on practice and case reports, not on good trials. Rest, ice and normal care should come first. Swelling and stiffness after soft-tissue injury: Traditional use is clear. Some small Chinese-language studies report faster easing of swelling, but they are poorly reported and hard to check. Treat this as unproven. Pain that lingers weeks after an accident: In Chinese medicine, long-lasting pain after trauma is read as "stuck blood", which is what this formula targets. There is no reliable human trial evidence for it. Lasting pain needs a doctor's assessment first. Recovery after a broken bone, as an add-on: Sometimes given alongside standard care once the bone has been set. It is not a substitute for a cast, surgery or follow-up X-rays. No trial we can identify shows it speeds bone healing.

Where it comes from:

The formula first appears in Yi Xue Fa Ming (Clarifying the Study of Medicine), written by Li Dong-yuan around 1231, in the Jin dynasty.

It was written for pain in the chest and side after a fall or a blow. It has stayed in use in Chinese trauma and bone-setting practice ever since, which gives it a long record in one tradition.

Who should avoid Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant; this formula moves blood strongly and can harm a pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban or heparin.
  • Do not use if you take aspirin, clopidogrel or another antiplatelet drug (a medicine that stops blood cells sticking together).
  • Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder such as haemophilia (a condition where the blood does not clot properly).
  • Do not use if you are still bleeding from an injury, or you are bleeding from the gut, the nose or anywhere else.
  • Do not use if you have surgery, dental surgery or a procedure planned in the next two weeks.
  • Do not use if you have a peptic ulcer (a sore in the stomach lining), colitis (an inflamed bowel) or ongoing diarrhoea.
  • Do not use if you have low potassium (hypokalaemia), high blood pressure that is not under control, heart failure or a heart-rhythm problem; the licorice in it can make these worse.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or liver disease, unless your own doctor has checked the product and agreed.
  • Do not use if you are offered a version containing pangolin scale (Chuan Shan Jia); pangolins are protected and this trade is illegal, so refuse the product.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a child; this formula is not for children.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor straight away if you bruise easily, bleed from the gums or nose, vomit blood, or pass black or bloody stools.

Get urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, a very fast or uneven heartbeat, or sudden weakness in your muscles.

Get an injury checked in person first if there was a heavy blow to the head, chest or belly, if a limb looks bent or cannot bear weight, or if pain gets worse instead of better. Also see a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than two days, or if your ankles swell.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
