Wyethia helenioides

Recognised but minor use in homeopathy since the 1800s; no human trials support it, and at 30C no plant material remains.

What is Wyethia helenioides? Wyethia helenioides is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from a plant called poison weed, which grows in the western United States. It is a single remedy, so it has one source and is not a blend. People take it most often for an itchy, dry throat. It is also used for a dry, tickly cough and for a lump feeling in the throat. Some people use it in hay fever season. Here is the short verdict. No human trial shows that it works better than a fake pill. And a long record of use is not proof that a remedy works. How does Wyethia helenioides work? There is no known way this remedy could act in the body. That is the plain answer, and the rest is background. The plant root is soaked in alcohol to make a strong extract, called the mother tincture. That extract is then shaken and watered down again and again. This step-by-step watering down is what makes it a homeopathic remedy. At 30C the mix has been watered down 30 times in a row. At that point no plant matter is left at all. Only the water, alcohol or sugar carrier remains. Homeopathy rests on an old idea called "like cures like". The claim is that a tiny trace of a plant can ease the same signs the raw plant causes. Tests have not shown that this idea holds up. Any relief people notice is best explained as placebo. Placebo means feeling better from the act of being treated, not from the remedy itself. What forms does Wyethia helenioides come in? Most people buy small sugar pills, also called pellets. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. The mother tincture is the strong plant extract used to make all the rest. Common strengths are 6C, 12C and 30C. A higher number means the mix was watered down more times. Some labels read 6X or 30X, which is a smaller step at each stage. Where it comes from: Wyethia entered the list of homeopathic remedies in the United States in the 1800s. Homeopaths tied it to an itchy throat and to the dry, tickly throat of singers and speakers. It has always been a minor remedy rather than a staple. Some California tribes ate the seeds of related Wyethia plants. That food use is a separate story from the homeopathic one.

Helps

What does Wyethia helenioides help with? Itchy, dry, tickly throat: This is the classic reason homeopaths pick Wyethia. The picture is an itch you cannot scratch, deep in the throat. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. Dry cough with constant throat clearing: Tradition points to a dry cough with no phlegm, plus a need to clear the throat over and over. Evidence for this use is absent. A cough that lasts more than three weeks needs a doctor. Throat strain in singers, teachers and speakers: Older homeopathic books used it for a hot, dry throat after heavy voice use. Rest, water and voice care are the measures with real support. The remedy has not been tested for this. Hay fever with an itchy roof of the mouth: Some homeopaths use it in pollen season for an itchy palate (the roof of the mouth) and nose. Tested allergy treatments work better and faster. Do not swap your allergy medicine for this. Lump feeling in the throat with no clear cause: Tradition lists a feeling of something stuck in the throat. This sign can also come from reflux, thyroid problems or, rarely, cancer. Get a lasting lump feeling checked before treating it yourself.

Where it comes from:

Wyethia entered the list of homeopathic remedies in the United States in the 1800s. Homeopaths tied it to an itchy throat and to the dry, tickly throat of singers and speakers. It has always been a minor remedy rather than a staple.

Some California tribes ate the seeds of related Wyethia plants. That food use is a separate story from the homeopathic one.

Who should avoid Wyethia helenioides?

  • Do not use if you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking — get medical help straight away
  • Do not use if you have a sore throat with a high fever, a rash, or pus on the tonsils (the soft lumps at the back of the throat)
  • Do not use if you have had a lump feeling in the throat for more than three weeks, or any trouble swallowing
  • Do not use if you would have to stop or cut down an asthma, allergy or other prescribed medicine to take it
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine
  • Do not use if you have ever reacted badly to Wyethia or other daisy-family plants, such as ragweed, daisies or chamomile
  • Do not use if you are giving alcohol drops to a baby or young child, or if you are avoiding alcohol for any reason
  • Do not use if you are thinking of putting the undiluted mother tincture on your skin or in your eyes, as it can irritate both

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you have a fever above 38.5C, a very painful throat on one side, a swollen neck, drooling, or any trouble breathing or swallowing.

Book a normal appointment if a sore throat lasts more than a week, or a cough lasts more than three weeks. Do the same for a lump feeling in the throat that will not go away.

Get checked soon if you cough up blood, lose weight without trying, or keep losing your voice. And see a doctor if this remedy has not helped within three days.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
