This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Vitamin B9 is a water-soluble B vitamin that your body needs every single day but cannot make on its own. Folate is the natural form found in leafy greens, legumes, and liver — folic acid is the synthetic version added to supplements and fortified foods. L-methylfolate (5-MTHF) is the active, pre-converted form that skips the conversion step your liver needs to do, making it especially valuable for people with the MTHFR gene variant who convert folate poorly.
Folate is essential for a process called methylation — one of the body's most fundamental behind-the-scenes operations. Methylation makes DNA, repairs cells, builds neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, and manages the amino acid homocysteine. When folate is in short supply, these processes slow down: cell division suffers (critical during pregnancy), mood chemistry gets disrupted, and homocysteine can build up to levels that stress the heart and blood vessels.
Standard folic acid tablets are inexpensive and widely available, but L-methylfolate supplements (sold as 5-MTHF or under brand names like Metafolin and Quatrefolic) are better absorbed and more effective for people with methylation issues. Prescription L-methylfolate (Deplin) is available at 7.5 mg and 15 mg doses for psychiatric applications. Sublingual and liquid forms offer another option for those with absorption concerns.
The discovery of folate traces back to the 1930s when researcher Lucy Wills identified a nutritional factor in yeast and liver that prevented a severe anemia in pregnant women in India. The vitamin was isolated in 1941 and named 'folic acid' from the Latin word for leaf, reflecting its abundance in leafy greens. Mandatory folic acid fortification of grain products — introduced in the U.S. in 1998 — is considered one of public health's greatest successes, cutting neural tube defect rates by roughly 35%.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
