What is Urolithin A? Urolithin A is a compound produced in your gut when bacteria break down ellagitannins — plant polyphenols found in pomegranates, walnuts, and certain berries. Because gut bacteria vary so widely between people, only about 30–40% of adults naturally produce meaningful amounts of Urolithin A from diet alone. Supplementing it directly bypasses this limitation, delivering consistent levels regardless of your microbiome. How does Urolithin A work? Urolithin A works by activating mitophagy — the body's built-in process for identifying and recycling old, damaged mitochondria so new, healthier ones can take their place. Mitochondria are the tiny power generators inside every cell, and as they age or get damaged, they become less efficient and can cause cellular stress. By keeping the mitochondrial pool cleaner and more functional, Urolithin A helps cells produce energy more effectively, which shows up as better muscle performance and less fatigue. What forms does Urolithin A come in? Urolithin A supplements are most commonly sold as capsules (typically 500–1000 mg ) or as flavored powder drink mixes. The most clinically studied commercial form is Mitopure (Timeline Nutrition), a highly pure, standardized UA powder used in human trials. Bioavailability of supplemental UA is consistent and does not depend on gut microbiome composition, unlike dietary precursors. Where it comes from: Urolithin A was identified as a human gut metabolite in the early 2000s, and its link to mitophagy was first established in landmark research around 2016. It represents a relatively new class of postbiotic supplements — compounds your body was always designed to make, but that many people never produce in effective amounts due to microbiome variability.

Helps

What does Urolithin A help with? Muscle strength and weakness: Urolithin A has been shown in human trials to measurably improve muscle endurance and hand-grip strength, particularly in older adults. By clearing out worn-out mitochondria in muscle cells, it helps muscles produce energy more efficiently and resist fatigue during physical effort. Exercise endurance and fatigue: Healthy middle-aged adults taking Urolithin A showed improved performance on endurance tests compared to placebo groups in controlled trials. The benefit appears to come from better mitochondrial turnover in muscle tissue, allowing sustained energy output during exercise. Age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia): Declining mitochondrial quality is one of the core drivers of age-related muscle loss. Urolithin A targets this mechanism directly, and trials in older adults have shown improvements in muscle endurance biomarkers and physical performance scores, making it a promising tool for preserving muscle as we age. Low cellular energy: When mitochondria accumulate damage over time, cells struggle to produce enough energy for basic functions. Urolithin A's mitophagy-boosting effect essentially rejuvenates the cell's energy supply by clearing old mitochondria and making room for fresh, efficient ones. Inflammation: Damaged mitochondria are a known trigger for chronic low-grade inflammation, a process often called 'inflammaging.' By reducing the burden of dysfunctional mitochondria, Urolithin A has shown measurable reductions in inflammatory markers in human studies. Gut health and microbiome balance: The ellagitannin precursors to Urolithin A (found in pomegranates and walnuts) act as prebiotics, selectively feeding beneficial gut bacteria. Some research suggests Urolithin A itself may also support the gut lining and influence microbiome composition positively. Metabolic health: Early human data and mechanistic research suggest Urolithin A may support insulin sensitivity and healthy fat metabolism, likely through its effects on mitochondrial efficiency in metabolic tissues. This area is still under active investigation. Healthy aging and longevity: Mitophagy naturally declines with age, which is strongly linked to the physical and cognitive decline associated with getting older. Urolithin A is one of the only natural compounds shown in human trials to restore mitophagy activity, placing it at the center of serious longevity research.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
