What is NR Nicotinamide Riboside? Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a naturally occurring form of vitamin B3 found in small amounts in milk and certain foods. Unlike regular niacin, NR converts efficiently into NAD+ — a coenzyme your cells depend on for energy metabolism, DNA repair, and stress response. Interest in NR has grown rapidly because NAD+ levels naturally decline with age, and restoring them appears to support several hallmarks of healthy aging. How does NR Nicotinamide Riboside work? Once absorbed, NR is converted into NAD+ through a dedicated cellular pathway. NAD+ powers the mitochondria (your cells' energy factories), activates sirtuins — proteins linked to longevity and gene regulation — and supports PARP enzymes that repair damaged DNA. By raising NAD+ levels, NR essentially helps cells run more efficiently and recover more effectively from everyday stress and damage. What forms does NR Nicotinamide Riboside come in? NR is most commonly available in capsule or tablet form, with doses typically ranging from 150 mg to 500 mg per serving. Some brands offer powder for flexibility in dosing. Sublingual tablets exist but have limited evidence of superior absorption. The most studied commercial form is Niagen® (NR chloride), manufactured by ChromaDex. Where it comes from: NR was identified as a NAD+ precursor in yeast in 2004 by Charles Brenner, whose landmark work sparked commercial and clinical interest. Human clinical trials began around 2016, making NR one of the newer entries in the longevity supplement space. Despite its short research history, it has quickly accumulated a meaningful body of human trial data.

Helps

What does NR Nicotinamide Riboside help with? Low energy and fatigue: NAD+ is at the heart of how your mitochondria turn food into usable energy. As NAD+ levels drop with age or chronic stress, energy production becomes less efficient. Supplementing with NR has been shown to meaningfully raise NAD+ levels in blood, which many users report translates to better stamina and reduced fatigue over weeks of use. Healthy aging and longevity: One of the key features of aging at the cellular level is declining NAD+. NR directly addresses this by replenishing NAD+ and activating sirtuin proteins, which regulate how genes respond to stress and damage. This combination is thought to slow some cellular aging processes and support overall healthspan. Muscle weakness and recovery: Muscles depend heavily on NAD+ to generate energy during exercise and to repair afterward. Studies in older adults suggest NR supplementation may support muscle endurance and reduce age-related decline in muscle function, making it particularly relevant for active older individuals. Cognitive decline and brain health: The brain is one of the most energy-hungry organs in the body and is especially vulnerable to declining NAD+. Early human research suggests NR may help protect neurons and support cognitive function, and it is being actively studied in the context of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. High blood pressure (mild): A well-designed human trial found that NR reduced arterial stiffness and systolic blood pressure in middle-aged to older adults — effects linked to improved blood vessel flexibility when NAD+ levels are higher. This makes it a potentially useful add-on for cardiovascular wellness. Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance: NAD+ plays a key role in how the body processes fats and sugars. Some human research suggests NR may improve markers of metabolic health, including insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles, particularly in overweight individuals — though results are mixed and more research is ongoing. Noise-induced hearing protection: Animal research is strong, and emerging human research suggests NR may help protect the inner ear from noise-induced damage by maintaining NAD+ levels in cochlear nerve fibers. It is being actively explored as a preventive strategy for hearing loss. Chemotherapy-related fatigue and neuropathy: Early clinical work suggests NR may help reduce fatigue and support nerve health in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, where NAD+ depletion is a known side effect of certain drug regimens. This is an emerging area with promising but preliminary results. Liver health and fatty liver: NAD+ is essential for liver metabolism of fats and alcohol. Preliminary human research suggests NR may support liver function and reduce liver fat accumulation in at-risk individuals, positioning it as a potential tool in metabolic liver disease management.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
