Stramonium

Evidence grade insufficient: trials do not tell Stramonium apart from placebo. Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of homeopathy.

Home

What is Stramonium? Stramonium is a homeopathic remedy made from the thorn apple plant. Its Latin name is Datura stramonium. It is also called jimson weed. Homeopaths give it as a single drug. That means it is used on its own, not mixed into a blend. It is used most often for night terrors, fear of the dark, and wild or fearful behaviour. The plant is first soaked to make a tincture. That liquid is then watered down step by step. At the common 30C strength, essentially none of the plant is left. Trials do not show any effect beyond a placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. Those are two separate things, and we report both. How does Stramonium work? Homeopathy rests on an idea called "like cures like". The claim is that a substance which causes a symptom can also treat it, once watered down. Thorn apple poisoning brings fear, confusion and wild behaviour. So homeopaths give Stramonium for those same states. Each step of watering down is followed by hard shaking. Homeopaths say this leaves a healing "imprint" in the water. No known body process or law of physics backs this up. At 30C there are no plant molecules left to act on the body. Reported benefit is best explained by time, attention and placebo effect. What forms does Stramonium come in? Stramonium comes as small sugar pellets or pills that melt under the tongue. It also comes as liquid drops in alcohol and water. Common strengths are 6C, 30C, 200C and higher. The higher the number, the more times the liquid was watered down. Mother tincture and low strengths such as 1X to 3X also exist. These can hold plant poison, and many countries limit who may sell or prescribe them. Where it comes from: Thorn apple has a long record in folk medicine. Dried leaves were once smoked for asthma, and parts of the plant were used for pain. It was also long known as a poison, and as a plant used to cause visions. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, tested the plant in the early 1800s. Stramonium has stayed a well-known remedy in homeopathic books ever since. Its standing in homeopathy is strong. Its standing in mainstream medicine rests only on the plant's poison, not on the diluted remedy.

Helps

What does Stramonium help with? Night terrors and fear of the dark in children: This is the best-known homeopathic use. Books describe a child who wakes screaming, clings to a parent and will not be left in a dark room. No trial has tested Stramonium for night terrors, so we cannot say it helps. Night terrors often fade on their own as a child grows. Sudden rage, biting or striking out: Homeopathic texts match Stramonium to violent, frightened behaviour that starts fast. This is traditional picture-matching, not tested treatment. Sudden change in behaviour needs a proper check by a doctor, since it can come from infection, injury, drugs or a mental health crisis. Confusion or rambling talk during a high fever: Old homeopathic books list Stramonium for a hot, flushed person who talks wildly during fever. There is no human trial evidence for this. Confusion with a high fever can be a warning sign of serious illness, so get medical help the same day. Stammering and stumbling speech: Some homeopathic texts list Stramonium for speech that sticks or comes out in bursts. The evidence here is traditional use only. Speech therapy has real evidence and is the place to start. Twitching or jerking movements: Homeopaths link Stramonium to jerky movements and spasms, based on the poison picture of the plant. No trial supports this use. New or repeated jerking, stiffening or blackouts needs urgent medical review.

Where it comes from:

Thorn apple has a long record in folk medicine.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Stramonium need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Stramonium?

  • Never eat, chew, smoke or brew the raw thorn apple plant, its leaves, flowers or seeds — it is a deadly poison and has killed people
  • Do not use mother tincture or low strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X unless a doctor has prescribed them, because these can still hold plant poison
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it is safe
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child without advice from a doctor
  • Do not use low strengths if you have glaucoma (high pressure in the eye)
  • Do not use low strengths if you have trouble passing urine or an enlarged prostate (a swollen gland near the bladder)
  • Do not use low strengths if you have a fast or uneven heartbeat
  • Do not use low strengths if you have epilepsy (a condition that causes seizures)
  • Do not use low strengths if you take drying medicines, older sleepy allergy medicines, or older mood medicines called tricyclics
  • Do not use it in place of treatment for a seizure, a high fever, a head injury or a mental health crisis
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if someone has eaten any part of the thorn apple plant, or has swallowed mother tincture or a low-strength liquid. Signs of poisoning include a dry mouth, wide pupils, hot red skin, a racing heart, confusion, seeing things that are not there, fits or collapse.

See a doctor the same day for a high fever with confusion, a stiff neck, a rash, a fit, a blackout, or any sudden change in how someone thinks or behaves.

Book a normal appointment if night terrors keep coming back, if speech problems are not improving, or if you are thinking of using this instead of a prescribed medicine. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist what you are taking.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
