Hyoscyamus niger

A long-standing staple remedy within homeopathy, but human trials do not show any effect beyond placebo.

Home

What is Hyoscyamus niger? Hyoscyamus niger is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from henbane, a very poisonous wild plant. Homeopaths give it for restless, agitated states, twitching, and dry coughs at night. The remedy is made by diluting the plant over and over. Each step shakes the liquid hard. At the usual 30C strength, no plant matter is left in the pill at all. Here is the plain verdict. Trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill. Long use inside a tradition is not proof that something works. How does Hyoscyamus niger work? Homeopathy rests on one idea. A substance that causes certain signs in large doses is given in tiny doses for those same signs. Raw henbane causes a dry mouth, wide pupils, and wild, restless talk. But there is a catch. At 30C the liquid has been diluted far past the point where any plant is left. No known way of working fits that, and studies do not show an effect beyond placebo (a dummy treatment). Very low strengths are a different story. A mother tincture, or a 1X to 3X strength, can still hold real plant poison. Those can act on the body, and they can harm you. What forms does Hyoscyamus niger come in? The most common form is a small sugar pellet. The pellets are soaked with the diluted liquid and left to dry. You may also see liquid drops in alcohol and water. Some brands press the remedy into lactose (milk sugar) tablets. Labels show the strength as 6X, 6C, 30C, 200C and higher. The higher the number, the more the plant was diluted. The mother tincture is the raw, undiluted plant extract, and it is not a homeopathic dose. Where it comes from: Henbane has a long record in Europe and the Near East. Old writers used it for pain and for sleep. It was also known as a poison and a witch's herb, and people died from it because the dose was so hard to judge. Samuel Hahnemann tested it on healthy people in the early 1800s. He added it to the homeopathic materia medica, the list of homeopathic remedies. It has been a standard remedy in that one tradition ever since.

Helps

What does Hyoscyamus niger help with? Restlessness and agitation during fever: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: a person who is hot, restless, talks nonstop and will not stay covered. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. Sudden confusion with fever needs a doctor the same day, not a remedy. Dry, tickly night cough: Homeopaths pick it for a dry cough that starts as soon as the person lies down. This use rests on old homeopathic case notes, not on trials. A cough lasting more than three weeks should be checked by a doctor. Twitching and jerking movements: Tradition links the remedy to twitching of the face and limbs. There is no trial evidence that it helps. New or repeated jerking movements need a medical assessment, because the cause matters. Trouble sleeping with talking or muttering: The remedy is given for restless sleep with muttering, or for a child who wakes with a start and cries out. This comes from homeopathic provings and case reports. No published trial supports it. Jealousy or suspicious behaviour: Homeopathic texts describe a jealous, suspicious, loud state and match the remedy to it. This is a traditional prescribing picture only. Mental health symptoms deserve real care from a doctor or therapist.

Where it comes from:

Henbane has a long record in Europe and the Near East.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Hyoscyamus niger need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Hyoscyamus niger?

  • Do not use if you would be taking the mother tincture or any strength below 6X or 6C without a doctor's supervision, because these can still hold real plant poison.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of eating, brewing or chewing any part of the raw henbane plant; it can kill, and there is no safe home dose.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as safety has not been shown and the raw plant is toxic.
  • Do not use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (raised pressure in the eye), since henbane alkaloids can trigger a painful attack.
  • Do not use if you have trouble passing urine from an enlarged prostate (a swollen gland below the bladder).
  • Do not use if you have a known heart rhythm problem (an irregular or racing heartbeat).
  • Do not use if you take an anticholinergic drug, a tricyclic antidepressant, a sedating antihistamine or a scopolamine patch.
  • Do not use if you would give it to a baby or young child without a doctor checking first.
  • Do not use if you have lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) and only lactose tablets are available.
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol for health, religious or recovery reasons and only alcohol-based drops are available.
  • Do not use if you would delay real treatment for a high fever, sudden confusion, a fit, or a cough lasting more than three weeks.

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services at once if someone is confused, seeing or hearing things that are not there, very hot with dry skin, has wide pupils, a racing heart, or a fit. These are signs of henbane poisoning and need hospital care straight away.

See a doctor the same day for a high fever with confusion, breathing trouble, or jerking movements that are new. Book a routine appointment if a cough lasts more than three weeks, or if sleep or agitation problems keep coming back.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
