What is Parotidinum? Parotidinum is a homeopathic remedy. It is a nosode, which means it is made from material taken from a sick person. Here the starting material is saliva from someone with mumps. It is sold as a single remedy under the name Mumps nosode. Some homeopaths give it during or after mumps. Some also offer it as a "homeopathic vaccine", which it is not. The remedy is made by watering the source down again and again. At 30C there is no source material left in the pill at all. Trials do not tell it apart from a dummy pill, and long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. How does Parotidinum work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on your body. Homeopathy holds that a tiny trace of what causes an illness can push the body to heal itself. The maker shakes and waters down the source over and over. Each step of 1C means the last mix is watered down a hundred times more. By 30C the mix has been watered down so far that no molecules of the mumps saliva remain. What is left is water, alcohol or sugar. Homeopaths say the water keeps a "memory" of the source, but no test has ever shown such a memory. So any change you notice while taking it is most likely the illness running its normal course, other care you are having, or placebo. What forms does Parotidinum come in? It comes in a few simple forms: Sugar pellets that you let melt under the tongue. Small tablets. Liquid drops made with water and alcohol. Common strengths are 30C and 200C. A higher number means the source was watered down more times, not that the pill is stronger in any measured way. Where it comes from: Nosodes come from homeopathy, which began in Germany in the early 1800s. Constantine Hering, a German-American homeopath, made the first nosodes in the 1830s. The idea was to use matter from a disease to treat that same disease. Parotidinum is a later and minor member of that group. It is used mainly around mumps. It has never been part of any other healing tradition.

Helps

What does Parotidinum help with? Mumps (a viral illness with swollen glands in the cheeks and jaw): This is the main traditional use. Homeopaths have given it during mumps for well over a century. No human trial has tested it for this, so there is nothing to show it shortens or eases the illness. Mumps usually clears on its own in one to two weeks with rest and fluids. Swollen salivary glands (the glands that make spit): Some homeopaths use it for swelling near the jaw and ear, even when mumps is not confirmed. There is no trial evidence for this. Swollen glands can have many causes, including a blocked duct, a stone or a bacterial infection, and those need a doctor. Contact with someone who has mumps: A few homeopaths give it after contact with a case, to try to stop the illness taking hold. Nothing supports this. It is not a vaccine, it does not build immunity, and it must not take the place of the MMR shot. Slow recovery after mumps: Tradition uses it when someone feels tired and run down for weeks after mumps. No trial has looked at this. Lasting tiredness after a viral illness is common, but it can also point to another problem worth checking. Swollen glands that keep coming back: Some older homeopathic texts list it for glands that swell again and again. This is tradition only, with no trial support. Glands that keep swelling, or that stay hard and painless, should always be looked at by a doctor.

It comes in a few simple forms:

Sugar pellets that you let melt under the tongue. Small tablets. Liquid drops made with water and alcohol.

Common strengths are 30C and 200C. A higher number means the source was watered down more times, not that the pill is stronger in any measured way.

Where it comes from:

Nosodes come from homeopathy, which began in Germany in the early 1800s.

Constantine Hering, a German-American homeopath, made the first nosodes in the 1830s. The idea was to use matter from a disease to treat that same disease.

Parotidinum is a later and minor member of that group. It is used mainly around mumps. It has never been part of any other healing tradition.

Who should avoid Parotidinum?

  • Do not use if you are treating it as a stand-in for the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine; it is not a vaccine and gives no protection against mumps.
  • Do not use if you or your child has mumps and is getting worse, with a stiff neck, a bad headache, confusion, or pain and swelling in the testicles; this needs a doctor now.
  • Do not use if you would stop or put off a medicine, antibiotic or vaccine that your doctor has told you to have.
  • Do not use if you have a weak immune system from illness or from drugs such as steroids or chemotherapy, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with milk sugar.
  • Do not use if you are giving alcohol-based drops to a baby or a young child.
  • Do not use if a lump or swollen gland has lasted more than two weeks, is hard, or keeps growing; get it checked first.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor straight away if you or your child has a stiff neck, a very bad headache, is confused or very sleepy, or has a fit. Get urgent help for swelling and pain in the testicles or the lower belly, or sudden hearing loss in one ear.

Ring your doctor the same day for a high fever that will not come down, for pain or trouble swallowing or drinking, or if a swollen gland turns red, hot and very tender.

Also book an appointment if a swelling has not settled in two weeks, if it keeps coming back, or if you feel worn out for weeks after mumps. And speak to your doctor, not a remedy seller, about the MMR shot.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
