What is Morbillinum? Morbillinum is a single homeopathic remedy made from measles secretions. Its Latin name is Morbillivirus, and it is also called the measles nosode. Homeopaths give it to people who feel run down after measles, and some offer it in place of a measles shot. The source is diluted over and over in water or alcohol. At 30C, the common strength, no trace of the source is left. What you take is plain water, alcohol drops, or sugar pellets. It is not a vaccine, and it will not guard you against measles. Trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. How does Morbillinum work? Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like": a thing that causes signs of illness is said to treat those same signs. The second is that shaking and diluting a source makes it act more strongly, not less. Neither idea fits what we know about the body. At 30C there is no source material left, so there is nothing to act on you. A nosode is a remedy made from diseased tissue or fluid, and the same dilution rule applies to it. Most changes people notice are down to time, rest, kind care, and the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). Measles also clears up on its own in most healthy people, which can make any remedy look useful. What forms does Morbillinum come in? Small sugar pellets that you let melt under the tongue are the most common form. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Strengths are written as 30C, 200C, 6X or 30X. A higher number means more dilution steps, not more material. Homeopathic pharmacies make it to order in some countries, and it is not sold in normal pharmacies in others. Where it comes from: Nosodes were brought into homeopathy by Constantine Hering in the 1830s. Morbillinum was written up later in the 1800s and stayed in homeopathic reference books. It has been used by homeopaths in Europe, South America and India, mainly during and after measles outbreaks. It has no role in any medical tradition outside homeopathy.

Helps

What does Morbillinum help with? Feeling weak or run down after measles: This is the main use homeopaths describe. It rests on case notes and teaching, not on trials. Most people get their strength back in a few weeks anyway. There is no way to tell the remedy apart from normal recovery. A cough that hangs on after measles: Homeopathic texts list Morbillinum for a dry cough that stays on after the rash fades. No trial has tested this. A cough that lasts more than three weeks needs a doctor, not a remedy. Ear or eye trouble after measles: Old homeopathic books mention it for sore ears or sore eyes after measles. This is tradition only. Ear and eye problems after measles can be serious. Some can harm hearing or sight. See a doctor for these. Claimed use after contact with a measles case: Some homeopaths give it after contact with someone who has measles. There is no trial showing that this changes your risk. If you have been near a measles case and you are not vaccinated, call your doctor or health service the same day. Real steps exist that can help within a short window. Claimed measles prevention: Morbillinum is sometimes sold as a "homeopathic vaccine". It is not a vaccine and no study shows it stops measles. Measles can cause deafness, brain swelling and death, above all in babies and in people with a weak immune system. The MMR shot is the only proven way to guard against it.

Where it comes from:

Nosodes were brought into homeopathy by Constantine Hering in the 1830s. Morbillinum was written up later in the 1800s and stayed in homeopathic reference books.

It has been used by homeopaths in Europe, South America and India, mainly during and after measles outbreaks. It has no role in any medical tradition outside homeopathy.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Morbillinum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Morbillinum?

  • Never use Morbillinum in place of the MMR measles vaccine, for yourself or your child
  • Do not use it instead of seeing a doctor if you or your child may have measles
  • Do not use it as your only care if you have a weak immune system, for example from cancer treatment, steroid tablets or HIV
  • Do not use it in place of care for a baby under 12 months, who cannot yet have the MMR shot
  • Do not use it if you are pregnant and think you have been near a measles case — call your doctor the same day instead
  • Do not stop or cut down any medicine your doctor has prescribed in order to take it
  • Do not take the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, and do not take the pellets if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar)

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you or your child has a fever with a rash, red sore eyes, and a cough. Also call if you have been near someone with measles and you are not vaccinated.

Call emergency services if there is trouble breathing, a stiff neck, a fit (a seizure, where the body shakes and the person may black out), great drowsiness, or signs of dehydration such as no wet nappies or no urine for many hours.

Get urgent care for earache, ear discharge, or eye pain after measles. These can harm hearing or sight.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
