Onkeito

Evidence grade insufficient: human trials are few, small and hard to pin down. Traditional tier T3: classical use across Chinese, Japanese and Korean

Home

What is Onkeito? Onkeito is a Japanese Kampo herbal formula for menstrual problems. Its name means "warming the menses decoction". It is a fixed blend of about twelve herbs, taken as a drink or granule. Kampo doctors give it for irregular periods, period pain and light, dragging bleeding. It is also used for cold hands and feet, dry lips and hot palms. In Japan it is a ministry-approved Kampo formula, sold as Tsumura 106. The honest evidence picture is simple. The traditional record is long and clear, but good human trial data is thin. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. How does Onkeito work? No one has shown how Onkeito works in the body. That is the plain answer. Kampo theory says the blend warms the womb and moves "blood stasis", a traditional idea of stuck or cold blood. This is a way of choosing the formula for a patient. It is not a lab finding. Some single herbs in the blend have been studied in cells and animals. In that work they appear to affect blood flow, hormone signals and smooth muscle. Whether any of this happens in women who take the finished formula is not established. What forms does Onkeito come in? Most people take Onkeito as a granule powder that dissolves in hot water. In Japan this is the ministry-approved product Tsumura 106. It also comes as a classic decoction. The dried herbs are boiled in water and the liquid is drunk warm. Tablets and capsules exist but are less common. Buy only from a licensed maker or a trained practitioner. Hange must be correctly processed, and home-made mixes can get that step wrong. Where it comes from: Onkeito comes from the Jin Gui Yao Lue, a Chinese medical text from around 200 CE. There it is called Wen Jing Tang. Japanese Kampo doctors took it up and have used it for centuries. Japan's health ministry later approved it as a standard prescription Kampo formula, Tsumura 106. It is still used in Chinese and Korean herbal practice under its older name. That gives it a classical standing across more than one tradition.

Helps

What does Onkeito help with? Irregular or missed periods: This is the classic Kampo use. Practitioners pick it for women with cool skin, cold feet and an unsteady cycle. Human trial evidence is thin. Small Japanese reports describe use for absent or irregular cycles. We could not identify a large, well-run trial to point you to. Period pain (cramps): Traditional use is well documented for cramping with a cold, dragging feeling. We found no good human trial testing Onkeito against a dummy treatment for period pain. Several other Kampo formulas are chosen more often for this. Light, prolonged or spotting-type bleeding: Kampo texts describe this pattern as a key sign for the formula. Bleeding that trickles on for days is the classic picture. There is no trial evidence we can cite. New or changed bleeding always needs a doctor's check first. Menopause symptoms: It is used for flushes in the face with cold feet and dry lips. This mixed hot-and-cold picture is the traditional target. Human evidence is limited and mostly small Japanese case reports. Treat any benefit as unproven. Cold hands and feet: The formula is named for warming, and this is a common reason it is chosen. No human trial has measured this for Onkeito. The claim rests on traditional use only. Trouble conceiving linked to irregular cycles: Kampo practice has long used it where cycles are irregular and the woman feels cold. This is traditional use, not proven fertility treatment. See a doctor about fertility rather than treating it yourself.

Where it comes from:

Onkeito comes from the Jin Gui Yao Lue, a Chinese medical text from around 200 CE.

Who should avoid Onkeito?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding
  • Do not use if you take theophylline (an asthma and lung drug), because this formula can push its blood level down
  • Do not use if you take clozapine (a drug for schizophrenia), because this formula can push its blood level down
  • Do not use if you have low potassium (hypokalaemia) or have been told your potassium runs low
  • Do not use if you have aldosteronism (a hormone problem that raises blood pressure) or high blood pressure that is not under control
  • Do not use if you have myopathy (a muscle disease) or ongoing muscle pain and weakness
  • Do not use if you have liver disease, or have ever had liver injury caused by a medicine or herb
  • Do not use if you already take another licorice-containing (Kanzo) herbal product, licorice sweets or licorice tea in quantity
  • Do not use if you have heart failure or a known heart-rhythm problem, unless a doctor is guiding you
  • Do not use if you have been given raw, unprocessed Hange (Pinellia) — raw Pinellia is toxic and burns the mouth and throat
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a child, unless a doctor has prescribed it

When should you see a doctor?

Stop taking it and see a doctor the same day if your face, hands or ankles swell, if you gain weight fast, or if your blood pressure climbs.

Get urgent medical help if your skin or eyes turn yellow, your urine goes dark, or you feel very tired and sick. These can be signs of liver injury.

Also seek urgent help for muscle weakness, strong cramps, or a heart that races or flutters. A new dry cough with fever or breathlessness needs same-day care too.

See your doctor first, before you start, if you bleed between periods, bleed after sex, or your periods suddenly change. Those signs need a proper check.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
