Nitricum acidum

A long-standing staple of homeopathic practice, but human trial evidence does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Nitricum acidum? Nitricum acidum is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from nitric acid, a strong acid used in industry. Homeopaths pick it for painful cracks and splits in the skin, mouth sores, warts, and sharp stinging pains. The remedy is made by diluting the acid over and over, with shaking at each step. At 30C, the usual strength sold in shops, not one molecule of the acid is left. What you take is water, alcohol, or sugar pellets. Trials do not show that homeopathic remedies work better than placebo (a dummy pill with no active drug in it). Long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works. This page reports the tradition and the evidence side by side, so you can judge both. How does Nitricum acidum work? There is no known way this remedy could act on the body, and no accepted proof that it does. Homeopaths work from two ideas. The first is 'like cures like': a substance that causes symptoms in a well person is said to ease those same symptoms in a sick one. The second is that shaking each dilution leaves some trace or pattern in the water. Chemistry does not support the second idea, and physics offers no mechanism for it. Any benefit people notice is best explained by the calm of a long consult, by time, and by the placebo effect. What forms does Nitricum acidum come in? Sugar pellets are the most common form. You let them melt under the tongue rather than chewing them. You can also find liquid drops in water and alcohol, and creams or gels sold for skin cracks. Strengths are labelled 6C, 30C, 200C, or 6X and 30X. Higher numbers mean more dilution, not more drug. Where it comes from: Nitric acid has been known to chemists since the Middle Ages, where it was used to part gold from silver. Homeopathy itself began in Germany around 1800 with Samuel Hahnemann. Nitricum acidum was tested on healthy volunteers in the 1800s and written up in early homeopathic texts. It has stayed a well-known remedy in homeopathic practice ever since. That standing sits inside one tradition, not across many.

Helps

What does Nitricum acidum help with? Painful cracks or splits in the skin (fissures): This is the classic reason homeopaths choose it, especially for cracks at the corners of the mouth, on fingertips, or around the nails. The old texts describe pains like a splinter or sharp stick. No human trial has tested Nitricum acidum for skin cracks. Mouth ulcers and cracked lips: Homeopathic texts link this remedy to raw, burning sores in the mouth and on the tongue. Most mouth ulcers clear on their own in one to two weeks, which makes any remedy look effective. There is no trial evidence for this use. Warts: Tradition points to ragged, jagged warts that bleed easily when rubbed. Warts often go away by themselves over months, so improvement is hard to credit to any product. Human evidence for this remedy in warts has not been published. Anal fissure (a tear in the skin at the back passage): Homeopaths have long used this remedy for tearing pain after passing stool. This symptom needs a proper check, because it can also come from other conditions. See a doctor rather than self-treating; no trial supports the remedy here. Sharp, splinter-like pains: In homeopathic teaching, the remedy is matched to a type of pain rather than a named disease. This is a picture from the texts, not a tested claim. No human study has looked at it.

Where it comes from:

Nitric acid has been known to chemists since the Middle Ages, where it was used to part gold from silver.

Who should avoid Nitricum acidum?

  • Never swallow or apply undiluted nitric acid, or any product labelled mother tincture, 1X, 2X, or 3X, unless a trained practitioner is guiding you. Raw nitric acid burns skin and tissue.
  • Do not use this remedy in place of medicine your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not use it to treat a wart, lump, ulcer, or sore that is growing, bleeding, or lasting more than three weeks. Get it checked instead.
  • Do not use it for bleeding from the back passage without seeing a doctor first, because this can come from serious causes.
  • Do not give it to a baby or child without advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife agrees.
  • Do not use the pellets if you have a lactose (milk sugar) allergy or severe lactose intolerance, unless the label confirms a lactose-free base.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, and choose pellets instead.
  • Do not use it for an infected skin split that is hot, red, swollen, or oozing pus. That needs treatment from a doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a crack, sore, or ulcer has not healed in three weeks, or keeps coming back. Go sooner if the area is hot, red, swollen, or leaking pus, or if you have a fever.

Get urgent care if you swallow strong nitric acid or a very low-strength acid product and feel burning in your mouth, throat, or chest. Also seek care the same day for bleeding from the back passage, a wart that changes colour or shape, or a mouth sore that bleeds.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
