Antimonium crudum

Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of homeopathy. Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials show benefit beyond placebo.

What is Antimonium crudum? Antimonium crudum is a homeopathy remedy. It starts from black sulphide of antimony, a dark grey mineral. Its Latin name is Stibii sulphuretum nigrum, also written as Antimonium sulphuratum nigrum. It is a single remedy, not a blend. Homeopaths pick it when the tongue has a thick, milky-white coat. Other common reasons are an upset stomach after eating too much, hard skin such as corns, and cracked heels. It is also given to children who are cross, touchy, and do not want to be looked at or touched. The mineral is watered down over and over before the remedy is sold. At the usual 30C strength, none of the mineral is left. Here is the verdict up front. It has a long place in homeopathy, but trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill. A long history of use is not proof that a remedy works, and that point is made here once. How does Antimonium crudum work? Homeopathy rests on an idea called 'like cures like'. A substance that causes signs of illness in a well person is said to ease those same signs in a sick person, once it is watered down. Raw antimony upsets the gut and the skin. That is why homeopaths match this remedy to gut and skin complaints, and to a coated tongue. There is no known way for a remedy with none of the starting mineral left to act on the body. Any change you notice may come from time, care and the attention of the visit. What forms does Antimonium crudum come in? Most people buy small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in alcohol, tablets and loose powders are also sold. Strengths on the label include 6C, 30C and 200C. The 'C' means each step waters the mix down one part in a hundred. Low 'X' strengths, such as 1X or 3X, are watered down only one part in ten at each step. That is why more of the metal can remain in them. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, tested this remedy and wrote it up in his book The Chronic Diseases in the 1820s and 1830s. Before that, antimony had been used for years in older European medicine to make people vomit. Antimonium crudum has stayed a well-known remedy in homeopathy ever since.

Helps

What does Antimonium crudum help with? Thick white coating on the tongue: This is the classic sign homeopaths look for before giving the remedy. No trial has tested it for a coated tongue. A thick coat with bad breath can point to thrush or a gut problem, so get it checked if it lasts. Upset stomach after eating too much: Homeopaths use it for a heavy, full feeling, burping and loss of appetite after a big meal. There is no trial evidence for this use. See a doctor if the pain is severe, keeps coming back, or wakes you at night. Corns, calluses and cracked heels: Tradition links this remedy to hard, thick skin on the feet. No human study backs it. Padding, soaking and proper shoes have far better support. If you have diabetes, let a foot specialist treat your feet. Cracks at the corners of the mouth: Homeopathic texts list splits at the mouth corners as a key sign for this remedy. No trial has tested that. These cracks often come from thrush, low iron or low B vitamins, all of which need a proper check. Crusty skin sores: It is a traditional pick for oozing sores that dry into thick, honey-coloured crusts. There is no trial evidence. Crusted sores can be impetigo, which spreads and usually needs an antibiotic cream. See a doctor first. Warts: Homeopaths use it for flat, hard warts, often on the hands or the soles. Studies of homeopathy for warts have not shown a clear benefit over a dummy pill. Most warts clear on their own in time. Cross, touchy mood in children: The remedy picture describes a child who is grumpy, whines, and hates being looked at or touched. This comes from homeopathic proving notes, not from trials. A sudden mood change with fever or poor feeding needs a doctor, not a remedy. Headache after too much sun: Old homeopathic texts list a dull headache after a hot, sunny day. No study has tested it. Water, shade and rest are the proven steps. A very bad headache with confusion or vomiting is an emergency.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, tested this remedy and wrote it up in his book The Chronic Diseases in the 1820s and 1830s. Before that, antimony had been used for years in older European medicine to make people vomit. Antimonium crudum has stayed a well-known remedy in homeopathy ever since.

Who should avoid Antimonium crudum?

  • Never use forms labelled 1X, 2X or 3X, because these can still hold antimony, a toxic heavy metal.
  • Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it is fine.
  • Do not give it to a baby under one year old.
  • Do not use it in place of any medicine your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not use it as the only care for a serious illness such as cancer, diabetes, asthma or an infection.
  • Do not use it if you have kidney disease (kidneys that no longer clean the blood well) or liver disease, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use a low-strength (X) form if you have a heart rhythm problem, meaning a heartbeat that is too fast, too slow or uneven.
  • Do not use the pellets if you react badly to lactose (milk sugar).
  • Do not use the alcohol-based liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, are in recovery from alcohol use, or are giving them to a child.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, because both react badly with alcohol.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms last more than two weeks, or get worse at any time.

Get help the same day for a fever over 39C (102F), bad belly pain, blood in your vomit or stool, or a skin sore that is spreading, hot or full of pus.

Call emergency services if someone has swallowed a lot of a low-strength antimony product and is vomiting hard, has a racing heart, or feels faint.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
