What is Ninjin Yoei-to? Ninjin Yoei-to (NYT) is a 12-herb Kampo formula whose name roughly translates to 'Ginseng Nourishing the Vital' — capturing its core purpose of replenishing qi (vital energy) and blood in people who are depleted. It has been prescribed in Japan and China for centuries, and today is one of the most widely studied Kampo formulas in modern Japanese clinical medicine. The formula is standardized and officially covered by Japan's national health insurance under the designation TJ-108. How does Ninjin Yoei-to work? NYT works through multiple pathways at once: the ginseng and astragalus component supports energy metabolism and immune function, the rehmannia and angelica combination traditionally nourishes blood and supports red blood cell production, and the polygala and schisandra herbs act on the nervous system to support memory and emotional balance. This broad, multi-herb synergy is the hallmark of Kampo — rather than targeting one mechanism, the formula gently supports several systems that tend to decline together during prolonged illness, aging, or physiological stress. What forms does Ninjin Yoei-to come in? In modern Japan, NYT is almost universally taken as Tsumura TJ-108, a standardized freeze-dried granule dissolved in warm water — typically 7.5 g /day divided into 2–3 doses. Traditional practitioners still occasionally prescribe the raw decocted form. Outside Japan, the formula may be available as loose herbs for decoction or in capsule/extract form from specialist TCM suppliers. Where it comes from: The formula originates from the Chinese classical text 'Wakansanyaku-Bencao-Yangyitang' lineage and was codified in its current 12-herb form in Japan during the Edo period. By the 20th century it was integrated into Japan's evidence-based Kampo system, where it is now one of the most frequently prescribed formulas for elderly patients with fatigue, anemia, and mild cognitive impairment.

Helps

What does Ninjin Yoei-to help with? Fatigue and low energy (post-illness, post-surgery): NYT is most celebrated for rebuilding energy in people who feel depleted after a serious illness, surgery, or long recovery. The formula's combination of ginseng, astragalus, and atractylodes helps restore physical stamina and reduces that heavy, dragging tiredness that can persist long after the original illness has passed. Chemotherapy-related fatigue and anemia: Several Japanese clinical trials have used NYT alongside cancer treatment to help patients maintain energy, appetite, and blood cell counts during chemotherapy. The rehmannia and angelica components support blood production, while the immune-modulating herbs help the body cope with treatment stress. Age-related memory loss and mild cognitive impairment: NYT contains polygala root, which stimulates nerve growth factor (NGF) — a protein the brain needs to maintain and repair neurons. Clinical studies in Japan have found improvements in memory, attention, and daily functioning in older adults, making this formula a growing focus of dementia-prevention research. Anemia and low red blood cell counts: The blood-nourishing herbs in NYT — especially rehmannia, angelica, and peony root — have been shown to support red blood cell production and improve hemoglobin levels in people with mild anemia, including those undergoing cancer therapy. Depression and low mood: NYT has been studied in mild depression and emotional depletion, particularly in the context of illness-related or age-related low mood. The schisandra and polygala components appear to have mood-stabilizing effects, and several small trials show improvements in depressive symptoms alongside fatigue relief. Appetite loss and unintentional weight loss: Loss of appetite and body weight is a common problem in older adults and cancer patients. NYT's digestive herbs — particularly citrus peel, poria, and atractylodes — help stimulate digestion and improve nutrient absorption, which can gradually restore appetite and healthy weight. Weakness and physical frailty in older adults: Research in elderly populations shows NYT can help improve grip strength, walking speed, and overall physical performance — markers of frailty that predict serious health decline. It is increasingly studied as a supportive treatment for sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). Cold sensitivity (feeling cold all the time): Persistent cold sensitivity — especially cold hands, feet, and lower back — is a classic Kampo indication for NYT. The formula's warming herbs (cinnamon bark, ginseng) improve peripheral circulation and energy metabolism, helping the body generate and distribute heat more effectively.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
