What is Korean pear juice? Korean pear juice comes from Pyrus pyrifolia, a crisp Asian pear cultivated for thousands of years across Korea, Japan, and China. Unlike Western pears, Korean pears are notably juicy, mildly sweet, and rich in a distinctive set of plant compounds. In Korean culture, the juice has been a go-to remedy for hangovers and sore throats long before scientists started studying why it works. How does Korean pear juice work? The juice appears to help the body break down alcohol faster by supporting two key liver enzymes — alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) — that process alcohol and its toxic breakdown product, acetaldehyde. Less acetaldehyde building up in the blood means fewer hangover symptoms. The juice's natural sugars (especially fructose) also help fuel the liver through this detox process, and its antioxidant compounds help reduce the oxidative stress alcohol creates. What forms does Korean pear juice come in? Fresh-pressed Korean pear juice is the most potent form and what most research has used. Bottled Korean pear juice is widely available and convenient. Concentrated extracts exist but vary in standardization. Eating the whole fruit provides fiber benefits fresh juice lacks. For hangover prevention, juice (roughly 220 ml ) taken before drinking is the studied approach. Where it comes from: Korean pears have been cultivated on the Korean peninsula for over a millennium and appear in historical texts as a medicinal food for respiratory ailments, fever, and digestive upset. The hangover-relief use is deeply embedded in Korean social culture, and formal scientific investigation by South Korean researchers beginning in the 2010s gave this folk tradition a credible biological explanation.

Helps

What does Korean pear juice help with? Hangover prevention and recovery: Korean pear juice is the most evidence-supported natural hangover remedy currently studied. Drinking about a cup ( 220 ml ) before alcohol significantly reduces the severity of headache, nausea, sensitivity to light, and concentration problems the next morning. The effect works best when taken before drinking rather than after. Alcohol metabolism support: The juice appears to help your liver process alcohol more efficiently, speeding up the clearance of acetaldehyde — the toxic compound that causes most hangover misery. This is driven by compounds in the pear that activate the liver enzymes responsible for breaking alcohol down. Digestive discomfort and bloating: Sorbitol and pectin in Korean pear juice help keep digestion moving comfortably. Sorbitol has a gentle laxative effect that eases constipation, while pectin acts as a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and helps regulate bowel function. Liver enzyme support: Beyond hangovers, the antioxidant compounds in the juice — especially chlorogenic acid — help protect liver cells from oxidative damage during alcohol metabolism. This liver-protective effect is what makes timing so important: the protection needs to be in place before alcohol arrives. Sore throat and throat irritation: Korean traditional medicine has long used pear juice with honey for sore throats and dry coughs. The juice is soothing and mildly anti-inflammatory, and the combination with honey adds antimicrobial properties. While formal clinical trials are limited, this use is consistent with the fruit's known anti-inflammatory compounds. Oxidative stress after alcohol: Alcohol generates a significant burst of free radicals in the body. Korean pear juice's chlorogenic acid and flavonoids help mop up these free radicals, reducing the cellular damage that contributes to how rough you feel the morning after drinking. Constipation (mild): The natural sorbitol content gives Korean pear juice a gentle, reliable effect on sluggish digestion. It draws water into the bowel and helps things move more comfortably, without the harshness of stimulant laxatives. Blood sugar balance support: Pectin (soluble fiber) in the juice slows the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream, which can help moderate blood sugar spikes after eating. This is more relevant with whole fruit or minimally processed juice that retains fiber content.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
