What is IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate)? IP6, also called inositol hexaphosphate or phytic acid, is a phosphorus-rich compound found naturally in whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. When we eat these foods, the body produces IP6 in cells — it plays a key role in how cells communicate and protect themselves. As a supplement, IP6 is usually paired with inositol to boost absorption and activity. How does IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate) work? IP6 works mainly by binding to iron inside the body, which helps stop iron from creating the free radicals that damage cells. It also appears to activate natural killer (NK) cells, which are a frontline part of the immune system. Researchers believe these two actions — antioxidant defense and immune activation — combine to give IP6 its most studied benefits, including supporting the body during conventional cancer treatment. What forms does IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate) come in? Supplements come as capsules, tablets, or powder — powder form is popular because users can blend it into smoothies or juice. Products often combine IP6 with inositol in a roughly 4:1 ratio. Most clinical research has used the combination product. Look for supplements standardized to the IP6 + inositol blend for best results. Where it comes from: IP6 was first recognized in the 1980s when Dr. Abulkalam Shamsuddin at the University of Maryland began studying why populations eating high-fiber, high-phytate diets had lower rates of certain cancers. His subsequent laboratory and early human research helped establish IP6 as a legitimate area of clinical inquiry rather than just a plant storage molecule.

Helps

What does IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate) help with? Immune system support: IP6 appears to boost the activity of natural killer (NK) cells — the immune cells that target and destroy abnormal or infected cells. Studies in people receiving chemotherapy found that IP6 plus inositol helped maintain immune cell counts better than placebo. Cancer support (complementary aid): IP6 is most extensively studied as a complement to conventional cancer treatment, not as a standalone cure. Early human trials suggest it may help reduce chemotherapy side effects, preserve quality of life, and support immune resilience during treatment. It is not a replacement for standard oncology care. High iron levels / iron overload: IP6 is a natural iron chelator, meaning it binds excess iron in the gut and bloodstream, helping prevent iron-driven oxidative damage. This may be especially relevant for people with hereditary hemochromatosis or those at risk of iron overload. Antioxidant protection: By reducing free iron available in the body, IP6 indirectly prevents a major source of oxidative stress — iron-catalyzed free radical reactions. This gives it broad cellular protection properties, particularly relevant in aging and chronic disease contexts. Kidney stones (prevention support): IP6 has been shown to inhibit the crystallization of calcium oxalate and other minerals that form kidney stones. Higher dietary phytate intake is associated with lower rates of calcium oxalate stone recurrence in some observational research. High cholesterol and triglycerides: Some human studies have found that IP6 supplementation modestly reduces total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The effect is thought to relate to its influence on lipid metabolism and antioxidant activity in vascular tissue. Liver health: IP6 may help protect liver cells from oxidative damage, which is relevant in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and liver stress from medications or toxins. Some early research suggests it supports healthy liver enzyme levels, though more large trials are needed. Platelet aggregation / cardiovascular risk: IP6 has been shown to reduce platelet stickiness (aggregation), which is one mechanism by which blood clots form. This mild anti-clotting effect may contribute to cardiovascular risk reduction, though it also means caution is warranted before surgery or alongside blood-thinning medications.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
