What is Agaricus blazei Murill? Agaricus blazei Murill (ABM) is a medicinal mushroom originally discovered in the Piedade region of Brazil, where the local population showed unusually low rates of cancer and chronic disease. It was introduced to Japan in the 1960s and quickly became one of the most widely used medicinal mushrooms in Japanese integrative oncology. Today it is cultivated and consumed across Brazil, Japan, and increasingly worldwide as a functional food and supplement. How does Agaricus blazei Murill work? ABM works primarily by activating the innate and adaptive immune systems through its high concentration of beta-glucans — long-chain polysaccharides that bind to receptors on immune cells like macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells, prompting them to become more active and vigilant. This immune-priming effect is thought to underlie both its cancer-supportive and antiviral properties. Its ergosterol content also supports vitamin D production, and its polysaccharides help moderate blood sugar by slowing glucose absorption and supporting insulin sensitivity. What forms does Agaricus blazei Murill come in? Hot water extracts and dried powder capsules are the most clinically studied forms. Hot water extraction is preferred for maximizing beta-glucan availability, as cell walls must be broken down for polysaccharides to be fully bioavailable. Whole dried mushroom in tea form is a traditional preparation still widely used in Brazil. Standardized extracts listing beta-glucan percentage are considered most reliable for therapeutic use. Where it comes from: Residents of Piedade, Brazil, near São Paulo, traditionally ate ABM as a daily food and were observed by visiting Japanese researchers in the 1960s to have exceptional health and longevity. Japanese scientists brought it back for cultivation and research, and it became deeply integrated into Japanese cancer care by the 1980s. In Brazil, it is known as 'Cogumelo do Sol' (Mushroom of the Sun) and remains a staple functional food in health-conscious communities.

Helps

What does Agaricus blazei Murill help with? Immune system weakness: ABM's beta-glucans directly stimulate macrophages, NK cells, and other front-line immune defenders, making them faster and more effective at identifying threats. This makes it one of the most well-supported natural immune activators available, particularly for people with weakened or suppressed immunity. Cancer support (during conventional treatment): ABM is widely used in Japan alongside chemotherapy and radiation, where it is thought to help protect immune function that is often damaged by conventional cancer treatments. Clinical studies in cancer patients have shown improved NK cell activity and better quality of life scores when ABM extract is taken alongside standard care. Type 2 diabetes and blood sugar: Several human trials have found ABM supplementation reduces fasting blood glucose and improves insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. It appears to work by slowing glucose uptake in the gut and supporting the cells' ability to respond to insulin more effectively. High cholesterol: ABM has shown modest cholesterol-lowering effects in human trials, reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol while maintaining or improving HDL (good) cholesterol levels. This is likely due to its beta-glucan content, which can bind to bile acids in the digestive tract and reduce cholesterol recycling. Hepatitis and liver health: Studies in hepatitis B patients have found ABM extract can reduce liver enzyme levels (a sign of liver inflammation) and improve overall liver function markers. Its antioxidant and immune-modulating properties may help calm the chronic inflammatory state that characterizes viral hepatitis. Allergies and inflammation: ABM appears to modulate rather than simply stimulate immune responses, helping to calm overactive immune reactions like allergies. Some evidence suggests it reduces the type of inflammatory signaling that drives allergic and autoimmune conditions. Low energy and chronic fatigue: Users and some clinical reports describe improved energy and reduced fatigue with regular ABM use. This is likely connected to its immune-balancing effects, antioxidant content, and potential support for mitochondrial function. Oxidative stress and aging: ABM is rich in antioxidants including ergothioneine and polyphenols, which help neutralize free radicals that accumulate with age and stress. Reducing oxidative damage is a general strategy for slowing cellular aging and protecting organ function over time. Infections and viral illness: By priming the innate immune system, ABM may help the body respond more quickly to viral and bacterial infections. Some studies show increased production of interferon and other natural antiviral compounds following ABM supplementation.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
