This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Hwanggi is the Korean name for Astragalus membranaceus, a flowering plant whose root has been used as a foundational tonic herb in Korean (Hanbang) and Traditional Chinese Medicine for more than 2,000 years. It is considered one of the most important qi-tonifying herbs — meaning it is used to restore and build foundational vitality in people who feel run-down, frequently sick, or chronically tired. Today it is one of the most researched herbal medicines in the world, with hundreds of clinical and laboratory studies exploring its immune, anti-aging, and cardiovascular effects.
Hwanggi works on several levels at once. Its polysaccharides (APS) directly activate immune cells, helping the body identify and respond to threats more efficiently. Its saponins — especially Astragaloside IV — support healthy inflammation balance and have been shown to promote repair in stressed or damaged tissues. Cycloastragenol, a compound derived from astragalosides, activates telomerase, an enzyme involved in protecting the ends of chromosomes and slowing cellular aging. Together, these compounds help regulate the immune system, support the adrenal response to stress, and protect cells from oxidative damage.
The dried root sliced into tongue depressor-like pieces (the traditional form) can be simmered into soups and teas and is still common in Korean and Chinese households. Capsules and standardized extracts offer convenience and consistent dosing — look for products standardized to at least 0.5% astragaloside IV or 40% polysaccharides depending on your goal. Tinctures are also widely available. The whole root is considered gentler and more tonifying, while concentrated extracts deliver more targeted therapeutic doses.
In Korea, Hwanggi has been used since at least the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE – 668 CE) as a core herb in Hanbang medicine. It appears prominently in the Dongui Bogam (1613), the encyclopedic Korean medical text compiled by royal physician Heo Jun, where it is prescribed for weakness, spontaneous sweating, poor appetite, and lowered resistance to illness. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it holds a similarly prestigious place, listed in the Shennong Bencao Jing — one of the oldest Chinese herbal texts — as a superior tonic safe for long-term use. Hwanggi literally translates to 'yellow leader,' a reference both to its yellow root and its status as a leading herb in classical formulas.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
