What is Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan? Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan is a Chinese herb formula made from four herbs. Herbalists use it for fixed, stabbing pain from injury, bruising or long-standing aches. It is treated as one medicine, not as four separate supplements. Its English name is "Fantastically Effective Pill to Invigorate the Collaterals". That is a traditional title, not a claim about results. The four herbs are: Dang gui (Angelica sinensis) Dan shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) Frankincense resin (ru xiang) Myrrh resin (mo yao) Herbalists use the formula for sports and accident injuries, bruising, period pain, and sore joints or limbs. They often give it alongside other formulas. On the evidence: there is a clear traditional record for this formula. But we could not find good-quality human trials of the whole formula. Traditional use tells you what people have done for a long time. It is not proof that a remedy works. That point applies to everything below. How does Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan work? In traditional terms, the formula is said to move "blood stasis". That is the idea that blood and energy get stuck in one spot. The pain then stays in the same place and feels sharp or stabbing. This is a traditional model of the body. It is not a description of biology that can be measured. Parts of the formula have been looked at in the lab. Compounds from dan shen thin the blood and widen small vessels in test-tube and animal work. Frankincense and myrrh resins hold substances that lower inflammation (swelling) markers in lab models. None of this has been shown to explain an effect in people who take the whole formula. Treat the mechanism as a fair idea that is not yet proven. The blood-thinning findings are, though, real enough to take seriously as a safety issue. What forms does Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan come in? You will usually find it as: Teapills or tablets. These are small round pills, and the most common ready-made form. Granules or powder. This is a strong extract that you stir into hot water. Raw herb tea. A practitioner gives you loose herbs, which are simmered into a tea. In the old texts, the powdered herbs were also taken with warm wine. That is not wise for most people today. Buy only from suppliers who test their products. Imported patent pills from sellers with no safety checks have at times held heavy metals such as lead or mercury. Some have held hidden drug ingredients. Where it comes from: The formula comes from Zhang Xi-chun, a Chinese doctor. He published it in his collected works in the early twentieth century. So it is a modern classic, not an ancient recipe. It went into the standard Chinese herb course of study. It is now widely taught and given for injury and for stubborn, fixed pain. Frankincense and myrrh have a much older record. They were used together for wounds and pain in Chinese, Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern medicine.

Helps

What does Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan help with? Pain and bruising after injury or sprain: This is the main traditional use. It suits pain that stays in one spot and feels sharp. Practitioners use it for sprains, knocks and sports injuries once bleeding has stopped. We could not find controlled human trials of it for injury pain. So this rests on tradition and on what practitioners see. Long-standing joint and muscle pain: Tradition uses it for aches that have lasted months or years. These aches feel fixed, rather than moving around. Lab work on frankincense and myrrh shows anti-inflammatory (swelling-reducing) action. That does not prove the formula eases joint pain in people. Do not use it in place of a diagnosis for ongoing pain with no clear cause. Period pain with clots: Traditional practice uses it for cramping period pain with dark, clotted flow. Dang gui and dan shen may thin the blood. So it could make heavy bleeding worse rather than better. See a doctor first if your periods are heavy. Belly pain linked to blood stasis: Practitioners may use it for fixed belly or chest pain that fits the traditional blood-stasis pattern. There is no human trial evidence for this. Belly pain and chest pain can be a sign of serious illness. Get a medical check before you treat yourself. Pain after surgery or a broken bone: Chinese hospitals sometimes give it during recovery, as part of a wider treatment plan. This should happen only under a qualified practitioner who works with your medical team. The reason is the bleeding risk around surgery and healing wounds.

  • Do not use if you take aspirin or clopidogrel to prevent clots.
  • Do not use if you take digoxin (a heart medicine), because it can change your drug levels and confuse the blood test used to check them.
  • Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder such as haemophilia (an inherited problem with blood clotting) or a low platelet count (too few of the blood cells that plug a wound).
  • Do not use if you are bleeding now, including a fresh wound, a nosebleed that will not stop, or bleeding from the stomach or bowel.
  • Do not use in the two weeks before any planned surgery, dental extraction or medical procedure.
  • Do not use if you have an active peptic ulcer (a sore in the stomach or gut lining) or severe acid reflux.

  • Avoid it if you have liver or kidney disease, unless a doctor who knows your case agrees.
  • Do not give it to children unless a qualified practitioner has prescribed it for that child.
  • Never take a product with no listed ingredients or no batch testing — unregulated Chinese patent pills have been found to contain lead, mercury or hidden pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Do not use if you have ever reacted badly to frankincense, myrrh, dan shen or dang gui.

When should you see a doctor?

Stop taking it and see a doctor the same day if you notice bruises appearing for no reason, bleeding gums, nosebleeds that will not stop, blood in your urine or stool, black tarry stools, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Get urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden severe headache, weakness on one side of the body, or trouble breathing.

Also see a doctor if your pain is getting worse, has lasted more than a few weeks, follows a fall or accident that may have broken a bone, or comes with fever, swelling, numbness or weight loss. Tell any doctor, dentist, surgeon or pharmacist that you are taking this formula, especially before a procedure.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
