What is Folic acid ? Folic acid is a B-vitamin that is essential for human health. It plays an important role in many processes in the body, including the synthesis of DNA, the production of red blood cells, and the proper functioning of the nervous system. How does it work? Folic acid works by serving as a coenzyme in the body's processes, including DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and the proper functioning of the nervous system. What are the active ingredients that are important for its medicinal properties? The active ingredient in folic acid is the chemical compound pteroylmonoglutamic acid. What forms does it come in? Folic acid can be found in supplement form, including tablets, capsules, and liquids. It is also present in some fortified foods, such as breakfast cereals. What if there's an imbalance or deficiency? If there is a lack of folic acid in the body, a person may experience anemia, cognitive decline, and other health problems. When was it first used for medicinal purposes? Folic acid was first discovered in the 1930s and has been used for medicinal purposes since the 1940s. Summary: Folic Acid is a B-vitamin that plays an important role in many processes in the body, including the synthesis of DNA, the production of red blood cells, and the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is often used to help with conditions such as anemia, depression, and certain types of cancer, and can be found in foods such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, and whole grains. What does Folic acid help with? Pregnancy support and neural tube defect prevention: Getting enough folic acid before and during early pregnancy is one of the most important things a woman can do for her baby's health. It dramatically reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida and anencephaly, which develop in the first few weeks of pregnancy when many women don't yet know they're expecting. Megaloblastic anemia: When your body doesn't have enough folate, it can't produce red blood cells properly — they grow too large and don't function well, causing fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. Folic acid supplementation corrects this type of anemia, typically within a few weeks of starting treatment. High homocysteine levels: Folic acid — especially alongside B6 and B12 — is one of the most effective natural ways to lower elevated homocysteine, an amino acid byproduct that, when too high, is linked to a greater risk of heart disease and stroke. It helps the body convert homocysteine into harmless compounds. Heart disease risk reduction: By lowering homocysteine levels, folic acid may help reduce cardiovascular risk, particularly in people whose high homocysteine stems from low folate status. While it doesn't replace standard heart medications, it is a meaningful supportive tool, especially for those with MTHFR variants. Depression and mood support: Low folate levels are commonly found in people with depression, and folate plays a role in producing serotonin and other mood-regulating brain chemicals. Some research shows that folic acid — particularly in its active L-methylfolate form — can improve how well antidepressants work, especially in people who haven't responded fully to medication alone. Cognitive decline and brain health: Adequate folate supports healthy brain aging, and low levels have been linked to a greater risk of cognitive decline in older adults. Supplementation, especially combined with B12 and B6, has shown improvements in memory and processing speed in some studies of older adults with elevated homocysteine. MTHFR gene mutation support: People with MTHFR gene variants — which are surprisingly common — have a reduced ability to convert standard folic acid into the active form the body uses. Taking L-methylfolate directly bypasses this conversion step, making it the preferred form for this group to ensure they get the full benefit of this essential vitamin. Fertility (men and women): Folate supports healthy egg maturation and sperm DNA integrity, and low levels have been associated with reduced fertility in both sexes. Women trying to conceive are advised to start folic acid supplementation at least one month before attempting pregnancy, and some research suggests it may improve sperm quality in men as well. Mouth sores (aphthous ulcers): Recurrent canker sores are sometimes linked to nutritional deficiencies including folate. Correcting a deficiency through supplementation can reduce the frequency and severity of these painful ulcers for some people. Gum disease: Folate appears to support healthy gum tissue, and some evidence suggests that folate supplements or folate-containing mouth rinses may help reduce gum inflammation and bleeding, particularly in pregnant women who are more prone to gum problems.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: The synthetic form of folate (vitamin B9), an essential B vitamin your body uses to make DNA, repair cells, and produce red blood cells.
  • Main uses: Best known for preventing birth defects during pregnancy, but also supports heart health, brain function, and red blood cell production.
  • Best for: Pregnancy support, Anemia, Heart health
  • Active ingredients: Folic acid, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), Dihydrofolate, Tetrahydrofolate
  • Forms: Tablet, Capsule, Sublingual tablet, Liquid drops, Gummy, Injectable (clinical use), L-methylfolate (active form)
  • Time to effect: Red blood cell changes within 4–8 weeks; neural tube protection requires adequate levels before and during early pregnancy
  • Side effects: Generally very safe at recommended doses; high doses can mask a B12 deficiency, which is the most important thing to watch for.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
