What is Daisaikoto? Daisaikoto (Da Chai Hu Tang in Chinese medicine) is one of the most widely studied classical herbal formulas in Japan's Kampo medical tradition. It is an eight-herb combination rooted in a 1,800-year-old prescription first recorded in the Han dynasty text Shang Han Lun. In modern Japan it is dispensed as a standardized granule extract and is officially covered under the national health insurance system for several conditions. How does Daisaikoto work? The formula works through multiple overlapping pathways: Bupleurum root and Scutellaria together help calm inflammation and support bile flow; Rhubarb and immature bitter orange stimulate the bowel and encourage downward movement of stagnant digestive contents; Peony root eases smooth muscle spasm. Taken together, these herbs are thought to reduce bile stasis, support healthy cholesterol processing in the liver, and gently lower blood pressure by relaxing tension in the vascular and nervous systems. What forms does Daisaikoto come in? Standardized Kampo granules (such as Tsumura TJ-8) are the most reliable and research-tested form — dosing is consistent and convenient. Traditional loose-herb decoctions are used in TCM practice and may be stronger but require preparation. Liquid extracts and capsules are available through specialty suppliers but have less clinical research behind them. Where it comes from: Daisaikoto originates from the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases), compiled by Zhang Zhongjing around 200 CE. It has been used continuously for roughly 1,800 years across China, Japan, and Korea for conditions involving the liver, gallbladder, and upper digestive tract. In Japan, it was formally integrated into Kampo practice during the Edo period and is today one of a handful of herbal formulas reimbursed by Japan's national health insurance.

Helps

What does Daisaikoto help with? Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation: Daisaikoto is perhaps best known in clinical settings for its effect on the biliary system. It helps promote bile flow and reduce inflammation in the gallbladder, which can ease pain after meals and support the slow dissolution or prevention of cholesterol-based gallstones. Several Japanese hospital trials have used it alongside standard care for gallbladder disease. High cholesterol and lipids: Regular use has been shown in clinical studies to modestly lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, likely because improved bile flow helps the body clear excess cholesterol through the digestive tract. It works best as part of a broader lifestyle approach rather than as a standalone cholesterol treatment. Metabolic syndrome and obesity: Japanese clinical research has found that Daisaikoto can support modest weight reduction and improvements in blood sugar and lipid markers in people with metabolic syndrome, particularly those with an apple-shaped body pattern and chronic constipation. It is thought to improve insulin sensitivity partly through its effects on gut motility and liver function. High blood pressure: Several small trials show that Daisaikoto can mildly lower blood pressure, especially in people whose hypertension is connected to stress, tension, or a sturdy build. The effect is gentle and works best as a complement to dietary changes rather than a replacement for medication. Fatty liver (NAFLD): Preliminary clinical research suggests the formula may help reduce liver enzyme levels and fat accumulation in the liver, possibly through its anti-inflammatory and bile-supporting properties. Evidence in this area is still emerging but is promising. Constipation (stress or liver-related): Rhubarb and immature bitter orange in the formula gently stimulate bowel movement and ease tension-related sluggishness in the gut. This makes it particularly useful for the type of constipation that worsens under stress or is accompanied by bloating and upper abdominal fullness. Upper abdominal pain and bloating: The antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory herbs in Daisaikoto help relax tension and reduce inflammation in the upper digestive tract, easing that uncomfortable tight or heavy feeling after meals, especially when it is linked to gallbladder irritation or liver congestion. Stress-driven digestive tension: In Kampo tradition, Daisaikoto is prescribed for the type of person who carries physical tension in the chest and upper abdomen — someone strong-built, prone to stress, and prone to gut symptoms when under pressure. Modern clinical use reflects this pattern: the formula helps down-regulate the nervous system's grip on digestive function.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
