What is Mung bean extract? Mung bean extract is derived from Vigna radiata, a small green legume that has been a staple food in South and Southeast Asia for over 4,000 years . The extract concentrates the bean's most bioactive compounds — especially flavonoids, peptides, and phenolic acids — into a more potent, absorbable form than whole cooked beans. It is used both as a dietary supplement and as a functional ingredient in health foods. How does Mung bean extract work? Mung bean extract works through several pathways at once. Its polyphenols — especially vitexin and quercetin — act as antioxidants that cool oxidative stress and quiet low-grade inflammation. Its bioactive peptides help block enzymes (alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase) that break down carbohydrates, slowing sugar absorption after meals. The resistant starch and fiber in the whole bean also feed beneficial gut bacteria, supporting a healthier microbiome. What forms does Mung bean extract come in? Standardized extracts in capsule or powder form offer a more concentrated dose of polyphenols than eating whole beans. Sprouted mung bean powder retains bioactive compounds while adding enzymatic activity. Whole beans and sprouts are the most food-accessible forms and provide fiber alongside the active compounds. For therapeutic use, a standardized extract standardized to vitexin content is preferred. Where it comes from: Mung beans have been cultivated in India since at least 1500 BCE and are documented in both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine as a cooling, detoxifying food used to reduce inflammation, support digestion, and treat fever. They are one of the most widely consumed legumes in Asia and have transitioned from traditional food medicine to modern supplement research over the past two decades.

Helps

What does Mung bean extract help with? High blood sugar / pre-diabetes: Mung bean extract slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the gut, which helps prevent sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. Its polyphenols also appear to improve how cells respond to insulin over time, making it a useful daily support for people managing pre-diabetes or blood sugar instability. High cholesterol: The phytosterols in mung bean compete with dietary cholesterol for absorption, gently nudging LDL levels down. Clinical studies using mung bean protein and whole bean diets have shown modest but meaningful reductions in total and LDL cholesterol over several weeks. Metabolic syndrome: Mung bean extract targets several components of metabolic syndrome at once — blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and inflammation — making it a well-suited daily support for people with overlapping metabolic risk factors. Gut health and digestion: The resistant starch and fiber in mung beans act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Regular consumption is linked to a more diverse microbiome and smoother digestion, and it may help reduce bloating over time by improving fermentation balance. High blood pressure: Bioactive peptides in mung bean extract have a mild ACE-inhibiting effect — the same mechanism targeted by some blood pressure medications, just much gentler. Human studies using mung bean protein supplementation have shown small but real reductions in blood pressure in people with elevated readings. Oxidative stress and inflammation: Vitexin, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid in mung bean are potent antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals and lower markers of chronic inflammation. This makes mung bean extract useful as a daily defensive supplement for people exposed to high oxidative loads from stress, pollution, or metabolic disease. Overweight / weight management: Mung bean's high protein and fiber content promotes a stronger feeling of fullness after eating, which can naturally reduce overall calorie intake. Its enzyme-inhibiting effects also mean fewer carbohydrate calories are absorbed from a meal, providing a mild but genuine contribution to weight management. Menopausal symptoms: Mung beans contain coumestrol, a plant-based phytoestrogen that can weakly bind to estrogen receptors. Early research suggests this may offer mild relief from hot flashes and hormonal fluctuation during menopause, though evidence in this specific area is still developing. Fatty liver (non-alcoholic): Preliminary research suggests mung bean polyphenols may help reduce fat accumulation in liver cells and lower liver enzyme markers. This is an emerging area of evidence, and while results are encouraging, more large human trials are needed to confirm the effect.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
