What is Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang? Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang is a classical Chinese herbal formula. You take it as a warm tea, made by simmering herbs. It holds seven herbs and is given as one remedy, not as separate supplements. Practitioners use it for people who feel cold and tired, yet also restless and dry. The usual picture includes: - chills and spells of warmth that take turns - night sweats - thirst - poor sleep - a tight, uneasy chest It is also known as Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig, and Ginger Decoction. Here is the honest verdict on the evidence. We could not find solid published human trials of this formula. It does have a long, respected record in Chinese and Japanese herbal practice, but a long history of use does not show that something works. This is not a mild tonic. It contains licorice and Trichosanthes root. It carries real risks in pregnancy, in heart and kidney disease, and alongside several common medicines. How does Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang work? In traditional terms, the formula is said to clear heat trapped in the "shaoyang" layer. Shaoyang is the half-outside, half-inside stage of an illness. The formula is also said to warm a cold, weak gut and calm the mind. That is a traditional model of the body. It is not a picture of biology we can measure. In modern terms, the single herbs have mostly been studied in test tubes and animals. Bupleurum saponins and baicalin from Huang Qin calm swelling in lab tests. Glycyrrhizin from licorice changes how the body handles steroid hormones. None of this shows why the finished formula would help people. Treat the mechanism (how it might work) as a fair idea, not a proven path.

Helps

What does Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang help with? Alternating chills and feeling hot: This is the classical target of the formula and the pattern it was written for in the third century. Traditional texts describe someone who swings between chills and warmth, sweats at night, and feels thirsty but does not want to drink much. There is no trial evidence we can point to showing it shortens or settles this pattern. If you have repeated unexplained fever, that needs a medical diagnosis first. Sleep trouble with anxiety: Practitioners commonly choose this formula for people who are wired and worried at night yet cold and drained by day. Oyster shell and licorice are the parts traditionally credited with calming. Evidence in people is limited to practitioner reports and small uncontrolled case series, mostly in Chinese and Japanese sources. We cannot say it works better than a placebo. Menopause symptoms: Modern practitioners in China and Japan often use it for hot flushes that come with cold hands, sweating and low mood. This is an extension of the classical pattern, not a classical indication. No controlled human trial of this formula for menopause could be confirmed. The licorice content also makes long unsupervised use unwise if your blood pressure is drifting up. Long-term tiredness with weak digestion: Dried ginger and cinnamon twig are the warming half of the formula, aimed at poor appetite, loose stools and cold limbs. That is a traditional rationale. There is no human trial evidence for chronic fatigue of any defined type. Persistent fatigue deserves blood tests before you reach for herbs.

The usual picture includes:

- chills and spells of warmth that take turns - night sweats - thirst - poor sleep - a tight, uneasy chest

It is also known as Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig, and Ginger Decoction.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or might be pregnant. This is an absolute ban, not a caution: Tian Hua Fen (trichosanthes root) can cause miscarriage.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are taking interferon, a medicine used for hepatitis and some cancers.
  • Do not use if you take digoxin, a heart medicine.
  • Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart failure, or an abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Do not use if you have hypokalaemia (low potassium) or take water tablets (diuretics) that lower potassium.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function.
  • Do not use if you have hepatitis, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) or any other liver disease, or if a blood test has shown raised liver enzymes.
  • Do not use if you have interstitial lung disease or any long-term lung condition that causes breathlessness.
  • Do not use if you have ever reacted badly to licorice, bupleurum, trichosanthes or shellfish, since oyster shell is an ingredient.
  • Do not use if you are due to have surgery within two weeks, because of possible effects on bleeding and potassium.
  • Do not use if you plan to give it to a child, or to a frail older adult, without a qualified practitioner supervising.

When should you see a doctor?

Stop taking it and get urgent medical help the same day if you develop a dry cough, fever or shortness of breath, if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, if your urine turns dark, or if you get chest pain, a pounding or irregular heartbeat, or sudden severe muscle weakness.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, a spreading rash with faintness, or serious trouble breathing.

See your doctor within a few days if your ankles swell, your blood pressure readings rise, you get frequent cramps, or you feel unusually tired and weak. Also see a doctor rather than self-treating if you have unexplained fevers, sweats or weight loss, since those need a diagnosis.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
