What is it? Bilberry extract is derived from the fruit of the bilberry plant ( Vaccinium myrtillus ), which is closely related to the blueberry. It's primarily known for its potential medicinal benefits, particularly for eye health and circulation. How does it work for medicinal purposes? Bilberry extract contains anthocyanins, which are potent antioxidants. These compounds help protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. Additionally, bilberry extract has been shown to improve microcirculation, enhance collagen formation, and strengthen blood vessels, especially in the eyes. Active Ingredients: The active ingredients in bilberry extract include anthocyanins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, among other antioxidants. Forms: Bilberry extract is available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, and dried berries. Imbalance or Deficiency: An imbalance or deficiency in bilberry extract may lead to decreased antioxidant protection and compromised eye health. First Medicinal Use: Historically, bilberry extract has been used for medicinal purposes since the 16th century, primarily for improving vision and treating various eye-related conditions.

Helps

What does Bilberry Extract help with? Eye health and night vision: Bilberry anthocyanins concentrate in the retinal tissue and help protect the delicate blood vessels that supply your eyes with oxygen and nutrients. They may also support regeneration of rhodopsin — the pigment your eyes use to see in dim light — which is why bilberry has long been linked to sharper night vision and faster adaptation from bright to dark environments. Diabetic eye disease (retinopathy): High blood sugar gradually damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina, a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Bilberry's anthocyanins help strengthen and protect these fragile vessels, and clinical studies in people with diabetes have shown measurable improvements in retinal blood vessel integrity with regular supplementation. Blood sugar control (type 2 diabetes): Bilberry extract appears to slow the absorption of sugars in the gut and improve how cells respond to insulin, helping keep blood sugar steadier after meals. In people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, regular use has been linked to modest but meaningful reductions in fasting blood sugar and post-meal glucose spikes. Poor circulation and vascular fragility: Anthocyanins bind directly to collagen in blood vessel walls, making them stronger and less leaky. This is helpful for people who bruise easily, have varicose veins, or experience heaviness and swelling in their legs from poor venous circulation. Eye strain from screens (digital fatigue): Prolonged screen time creates oxidative stress in eye tissue and can cause blurred vision, dryness, and focusing difficulty. Bilberry's antioxidant action in retinal tissue has been shown in clinical trials to reduce subjective eye fatigue and improve focusing endurance in people who work at screens all day. Glaucoma and eye pressure: Early research suggests bilberry may help support healthy eye pressure and protect the optic nerve from oxidative damage — two factors relevant to glaucoma. While it's not a replacement for prescribed glaucoma treatment, it may be a useful supportive addition. Diarrhea and gut inflammation: Bilberry's tannins have an astringent, soothing effect on irritated intestinal tissue, which is why dried bilberries have been used in European folk medicine for diarrhea for centuries. The anti-inflammatory properties of its anthocyanins may also help calm gut inflammation. High blood pressure: Bilberry anthocyanins support the health and flexibility of arterial walls and appear to have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect, likely through improved nitric oxide availability and reduced oxidative stress in vessels. Effects are modest and work best as part of a heart-healthy diet. Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Like its close relative cranberry, bilberry contains compounds that may help prevent certain bacteria from clinging to the walls of the urinary tract, potentially reducing recurrence of UTIs — though cranberry has significantly more research in this area. Metabolic syndrome: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — high blood sugar, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, and excess belly fat — that raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Bilberry has shown benefits across several of these markers in clinical research, making it a useful supportive herb for people managing this cluster.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
