What is it? Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid, a type of naturally occurring pigment found in plants. It is closely related to lutein and is one of the primary components of the macular pigment in the human eye. Zeaxanthin is known for its potent antioxidant properties and is particularly important for eye health, protecting against light-induced oxidative damage. How does it work for medicinal purposes? Zeaxanthin works by filtering harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light, protecting the eye tissues from oxidative damage. As an antioxidant, zeaxanthin helps neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. This protective action is crucial for maintaining eye health and reducing the risk of age-related eye diseases. What are the active ingredients that are important for its medicinal properties? The primary active ingredient in zeaxanthin supplements is zeaxanthin itself. It is often found in combination with lutein, another carotenoid that supports eye health. What forms does it come in? Capsules Softgels Tablets Liquid supplements Gummies What if I have an imbalance or deficiency? A deficiency in zeaxanthin can lead to poor eye health, increased risk of cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Supplementing with zeaxanthin can help improve macular pigment density, enhance visual performance, and reduce the risk of eye diseases. When was it first used for medicinal purposes? Zeaxanthin, like other carotenoids, has been consumed through diet for centuries. Its specific role in eye health has been recognized and studied extensively in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, leading to its use in dietary supplements.

Helps

Which conditions and symptoms does it help? Zeaxanthin has been shown in clinical trials to help with the following conditions and symptoms: Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): Slows the progression of AMD and improves visual function. Studies have shown significant benefits in reducing the risk and progression of AMD. Cataracts: Reduces the risk of cataract formation by protecting the lens from oxidative damage. Research indicates a lower incidence of cataracts with higher zeaxanthin intake. Visual Acuity: Enhances visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Clinical trials suggest improved sharpness and clarity of vision. Glare Sensitivity: Reduces sensitivity to glare and improves visual performance in bright light. Studies show decreased glare sensitivity with zeaxanthin supplementation. Retinitis Pigmentosa: May slow the progression of retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disorder affecting the retina. Research suggests potential benefits in preserving retinal function. Computer Vision Syndrome: Alleviates symptoms of computer vision syndrome, such as eye strain and fatigue. Studies indicate reduced eye discomfort and improved visual function. Dry Eye Syndrome: Improves symptoms of dry eye by enhancing tear film stability. Clinical trials suggest benefits in reducing dry eye symptoms. Diabetic Retinopathy: Protects against retinal damage in diabetic patients. Research indicates potential protective effects on the retina. General Eye Health: Supports overall eye health by providing antioxidant protection. Studies suggest enhanced ocular health and function.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
