What is Arabinoxylan (AXOS)? Arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (AXOS) are a type of prebiotic fiber extracted primarily from the bran of cereal grains like wheat, rye, and rice. Unlike most fibers that your body simply passes through, AXOS are fermented almost exclusively by specific beneficial bacteria in your colon — particularly Bifidobacterium species — making them one of the more selective and potent prebiotics available. They've been studied in clinical trials for their ability to reshape the gut microbiome, improve blood sugar control, and support immune responses. How does Arabinoxylan (AXOS) work? When AXOS reaches your large intestine undigested, beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus ferment it, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) — especially butyrate, propionate, and acetate. These SCFAs feed the cells lining your colon, reduce inflammation, help regulate blood sugar, and signal the immune system to stay balanced. Because AXOS selectively enriches the most beneficial bacterial species, it can shift your overall gut environment toward a healthier, more diverse profile. What forms does Arabinoxylan (AXOS) come in? AXOS is most commonly sold as a powder you can stir into water or smoothies, and is increasingly available in capsule form for convenience. It's also used as a functional ingredient in some enriched breads, breakfast cereals, and drinks. Doses used in research typically range from 2 to 10 grams per day, with powders offering the most flexibility for dose adjustment. Where it comes from: While arabinoxylan fiber has been part of traditional whole-grain diets across cultures for millennia, the isolation and clinical study of AXOS as a specific prebiotic is a modern development — emerging primarily from European and East Asian food science research in the 1990s and 2000s. Most clinical investigation has been conducted in the past two decades, placing AXOS firmly in the modern functional food and nutraceutical space rather than any single traditional medicine system.

Helps

What does Arabinoxylan (AXOS) help with? Gut microbiome imbalance (dysbiosis): AXOS is one of the most selective prebiotics known — it preferentially feeds Bifidobacterium species, which are closely linked to gut and immune health. Clinical studies show consistent, meaningful increases in Bifidobacterium counts within a few weeks of regular use, even in people with relatively low baseline levels. Blood sugar spikes and insulin sensitivity: AXOS slows carbohydrate digestion and blunts blood sugar spikes after meals. The short-chain fatty acids produced during its fermentation also signal the liver and muscles to improve insulin sensitivity over time, which has been demonstrated in clinical trials in both healthy adults and people with prediabetes. Constipation and irregular digestion: By increasing beneficial bacteria and short-chain fatty acid production, AXOS stimulates regular bowel movements and improves stool consistency. Clinical studies report meaningful improvements in stool frequency and ease of passing within 2–4 weeks in people who struggled with sluggish digestion. High cholesterol: AXOS can modestly lower LDL ('bad') cholesterol and total cholesterol, likely by binding bile acids in the gut and encouraging the liver to draw cholesterol from the blood to make more. The effect is modest but consistent across several trials. Chronic gut inflammation: The butyrate produced when gut bacteria ferment AXOS directly feeds colonocytes (colon lining cells) and helps keep the gut lining intact and less inflamed. This makes AXOS particularly interesting for people with ongoing low-grade gut inflammation or conditions like mild IBD. Immune system support: A healthier gut microbiome driven by AXOS feeds back into immune regulation — increasing secretory IgA (a frontline immune antibody in the gut), moderating inflammatory signals, and supporting the balance between immune activation and tolerance. Some trials have shown reductions in certain inflammatory markers with regular AXOS use. Metabolic syndrome: People with metabolic syndrome — a cluster of high blood sugar, excess belly fat, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure — tend to have poor gut microbiome diversity. AXOS addresses this directly and has shown improvements in multiple metabolic markers in clinical studies in this group. Weight management support: AXOS increases feelings of fullness by slowing stomach emptying and producing gut hormones like GLP-1 and PYY that tell the brain you're satisfied. While it's not a standalone weight-loss solution, it can be a useful tool as part of a broader healthy eating approach. Leaky gut and gut barrier health: The butyrate generated from AXOS fermentation helps tighten the junctions between gut lining cells, reducing 'leaky gut' — a condition where bacteria and toxins can slip through the gut wall into the bloodstream. Clinical research supports this gut barrier-strengthening effect.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
