This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Salacia is a genus of plants — most notably Salacia reticulata and Salacia oblonga — native to the tropical forests of Sri Lanka and India. The root and stem bark have been used in Ayurvedic and Sri Lankan traditional medicine for hundreds of years, particularly for conditions we now recognise as diabetes and obesity. Its active compounds are notable for mimicking the action of pharmaceutical diabetes drugs in a gentle, food-compatible way.
Salacia's key compounds — salacinol and kotalanol — are potent natural inhibitors of the enzymes alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase, which are the same enzymes that break down carbohydrates into sugar in your gut. By slowing this breakdown, Salacia reduces and delays the surge in blood glucose that follows a carbohydrate-rich meal. It also appears to support healthier insulin sensitivity over time and may reduce fat accumulation by influencing gut microbiota and bile acid metabolism.
Traditional preparation involves boiling the dried roots or stem in water as a decoction. Modern products use standardised water or hydroalcoholic extracts in capsule or tablet form. Water-based extracts are the best-characterised and generally preferred for consistency. Powder can be stirred into warm water or taken with meals.
In Sri Lanka, Salacia reticulata (called Kothala himbutu) has been prescribed by traditional physicians for well over 500 years as a first-line remedy for excessive thirst, frequent urination, and weight gain — all classic signs of diabetes. Sri Lankan folklore describes boiling the wood in a cup overnight and drinking the infused water each morning before eating. Indian Ayurvedic texts list it as Saptarangi, used for prameha (a broad category of metabolic disorders including diabetes). Modern Japanese researchers were among the first to scientifically characterise its active compounds in the 1990s, sparking a wave of clinical interest.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
