What is Chlorogenic Acid? Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenol antioxidant naturally concentrated in unroasted (green) coffee beans, and also found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs. It's the compound largely responsible for many of the health benefits associated with coffee consumption — especially since roasting destroys a large portion of it. As a standalone supplement, it's most commonly delivered through standardized green coffee bean extract. How does Chlorogenic Acid work? CGA slows the absorption of carbohydrates from the gut by inhibiting an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphatase, which helps keep blood sugar steadier after meals. It also activates AMPK, a cellular energy sensor that encourages the body to burn fat and improves insulin sensitivity. On top of that, it acts as a potent antioxidant that helps protect blood vessels and reduce low-grade inflammation — both linked to metabolic and cardiovascular health. What forms does Chlorogenic Acid come in? Green coffee bean extract is the most studied supplemental form, standardized to a known percentage of CGA. Isolated CGA capsules are available for those who want to avoid any residual caffeine. Food sources like coffee, apples, and blueberries deliver CGA alongside other beneficial plant compounds, making them a complementary dietary approach. Where it comes from: Chlorogenic acid has been consumed by humans for millennia through coffee, fruit, and vegetables, long before it was identified as a distinct compound. Modern interest in CGA as an isolated supplement surged after early 2000s research highlighted its role in glucose metabolism, and green coffee extract became widely known following metabolic health research in the 2010s.

Helps

What does Chlorogenic Acid help with? High blood sugar and prediabetes: Chlorogenic acid slows how quickly carbohydrates are digested and absorbed after a meal, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes. It also improves how well the body responds to insulin, making it easier for cells to take up glucose from the bloodstream. Weight loss and obesity: CGA appears to reduce fat accumulation by promoting fat burning and dialing back fat storage signals in the liver. Studies using green coffee extract standardized for CGA content have shown modest but consistent reductions in body weight and waist circumference. High blood pressure: Regular CGA intake has been linked to meaningful reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, likely by improving blood vessel flexibility and reducing oxidative stress in artery walls. Effects are most pronounced in people with mild to moderate hypertension. Insulin resistance: By activating AMPK — the body's fuel-sensing switch — CGA helps improve insulin sensitivity in muscle and liver tissue. This makes it particularly useful as part of a broader strategy for people managing prediabetes or metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome: Metabolic syndrome involves a cluster of issues including high blood sugar, excess belly fat, high blood pressure, and poor cholesterol levels. CGA addresses several of these simultaneously, making it a practical tool for people working on overall metabolic health. High cholesterol and triglycerides: CGA has shown modest improvements in LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels in clinical studies, likely by reducing fat synthesis in the liver and improving how the body processes dietary fats. Oxidative stress and inflammation: As a potent antioxidant, CGA neutralizes free radicals and lowers markers of chronic low-grade inflammation. This protective effect on cells and blood vessels underpins many of its other health benefits. Cognitive decline and brain health: Emerging research suggests CGA may help protect brain cells from oxidative damage and support healthy blood flow to the brain. Some studies have linked higher coffee polyphenol intake with better cognitive performance in older adults, with CGA considered a key contributor. Liver health and fatty liver: CGA has been shown in multiple studies to reduce fat buildup in the liver and lower liver enzyme levels, both markers of liver stress. It may be a helpful supportive nutrient for people working to reverse non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through diet and lifestyle. Gut microbiome imbalance: CGA acts as a prebiotic — gut bacteria ferment it into beneficial compounds like caffeic acid and ferulic acid, which feed healthy bacterial strains. Higher coffee polyphenol intake is consistently associated with a more diverse and favorable gut microbiome.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
