Shoulders and jaw always tight
Your shoulders sit up near your ears. Your jaw feels set, even when you are not eating or talking. By evening, the back of your neck aches and you notice you have been holding on all day.
Muscles brace when the body senses pressure. That bracing is meant to be short. When stress runs all day, the hold can stay on too.
Desk work, driving and looking down at a phone add to the load. So does clenching the teeth at night, which many people do without knowing. Poor sleep, cold rooms and rushing can make the grip harder to drop.
When to see someone
See a dentist if your teeth ache, chip or look worn, or if your jaw clicks, locks or will not open wide. See a doctor for jaw or shoulder pain that comes with chest pain, sweating or trouble breathing — for that, call for emergency help right away. Book a check too if an arm feels numb or weak, if your neck is stiff with a fever, or if the pain wakes you at night.
Below is a list of remedies people use for stress, each with an evidence grade. The grade shows how much research stands behind it, not a promise of any result for you. Read it as a starting point, and check with your doctor or dentist before you try something new.
