Heavy aching chest all day
Your chest feels heavy, like a weight is sitting on it. The ache does not come and go much. It is there when you wake up, and still there at night.
Grief often shows up in the body, not just the mind. After a loss, many people feel a dull, sore ache in the chest. A tight throat, deep sighs, or sudden tears can come with it.
Stress also keeps the chest and shoulder muscles tense. Breathing gets shallow, which adds to that sore, squeezed feeling. The pain is real, even when your heart is healthy.
When to see someone
Call emergency services if the pain feels crushing, or spreads to your arm, jaw, or back. Do the same if you are short of breath, sweaty, sick to your stomach, or faint. See your doctor soon if the ache gets worse when you walk, wakes you at night, or if you have thoughts of harming yourself.
Below is a list of traditional remedies used by people in grief. Each one carries an evidence grade. A high grade means more research stands behind it, and a low grade means it rests mostly on custom and personal reports.
