Flat brown patches on my hands
You see flat brown patches on the backs of your hands. They sit level with the skin, so you cannot feel them. They may be tan, light brown, or almost black.
Most often these are age spots. They build up on the skin you show to the sun the most. Hands get a lot of that sun, even on short trips outdoors.
Color cells in the skin gather in small groups. That leaves a flat dark mark behind. Your age, your skin tone, and past sunburns all play a part.
When to see someone
See a doctor if a patch grows, changes shape, or has ragged edges. Get it checked if it itches, bleeds, crusts, or holds more than one color. A new dark spot that looks unlike your others should be looked at too.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies people have used for age spots. Each one has a grade that shows how strong the evidence is, not a promise of results. A low grade means there is little good proof, so read the grade first.
