What is Polypodium leucotomos (leaf extract)? Polypodium leucotomos is a tropical fern native to Central America and the Caribbean, where indigenous communities have used it for centuries to treat inflammatory skin conditions. Modern research has focused on its ability to protect skin cells from ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage when taken orally as a concentrated extract. Unlike sunscreen you put on your skin, this is an inside-out approach to sun protection. How does Polypodium leucotomos (leaf extract) work? The extract is packed with plant antioxidants — especially ferulic and caffeic acid — that neutralize the damaging free radicals UV light creates in your skin. It also helps calm the inflammatory response triggered by sun exposure, reduces abnormal pigment production, and supports your skin's natural DNA repair mechanisms. Some evidence also shows it mildly strengthens your skin's immune defenses against UV-induced damage. What forms does Polypodium leucotomos (leaf extract) come in? Oral capsules ( 240 mg or 480 mg standardized extract) are the most studied and clinically used form. Topical preparations exist but have much less clinical evidence than the oral form. Most clinical trials use the branded extract called Fernblock (Heliocare brand uses this). Where it comes from: Indigenous peoples of Honduras and surrounding regions used preparations of the samambaia fern to treat psoriasis, inflammatory skin conditions, and as a general tonic. Spanish researchers began investigating it medically in the 1970s and 1980s under the name 'Anapsos' for psoriasis. By the 2000s, interest had shifted significantly toward its photoprotective and anti-pigmentation applications, which are now the core of modern clinical research.

Helps

What does Polypodium leucotomos (leaf extract) help with? Sun sensitivity and UV skin damage: Polypodium leucotomos helps your body handle UV exposure better from the inside out. It reduces the redness, cell damage, and DNA injury that UV light causes in skin cells — acting as a complement to topical sunscreen, not a replacement for it. Melasma (brown skin patches): Melasma is stubborn brown or grayish patches usually triggered by sun exposure and hormones. This extract helps by calming the overactive pigment-producing cells responsible for those patches, and clinical trials combining it with standard treatments like topical hydroquinone show better outcomes than the standard treatment alone. Vitiligo (loss of skin pigment): In vitiligo, the immune system attacks skin cells that make pigment. Polypodium leucotomos appears to reduce that immune attack and support repigmentation, particularly when used alongside UV light therapy — clinical trials show meaningful improvement in repigmentation rates compared to light therapy alone. Sunburn prevention: Taking it orally before sun exposure raises your skin's threshold for burning — you can get more sun before redness sets in. This has been confirmed in human challenge studies measuring the minimum UV dose needed to cause redness. Polymorphous light eruption (sun allergy): This common 'sun allergy' causes itchy rashes after sun exposure. Polypodium leucotomos has been shown in clinical trials to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of these reactions in sensitive individuals. Skin aging from sun exposure: Chronic sun damage is the main driver of wrinkles, age spots, and loss of skin elasticity. By reducing cumulative UV-induced oxidative stress and inflammation, regular use may help slow the visible signs of photoaging over time. Psoriasis (mild support): Early research — including the original Spanish clinical work under the name Anapsos — suggested benefit in psoriasis, likely through its immune-calming effects. Evidence here is older and less robust than for photoprotection, but it remains part of its traditional therapeutic profile. Skin cancer prevention (UV-related DNA damage): UV radiation causes DNA mutations in skin cells that can lead to skin cancer over time. Polypodium leucotomos has been shown to reduce UV-induced DNA damage markers and immune suppression in human skin — making it a promising adjunct for people with high skin cancer risk, though long-term cancer prevention trials have not been completed.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
