Dark marks left after breakouts
The pimple itself is gone. What stays is a flat brown, red or purple spot where it used to be. These marks can sit on your skin for weeks or even months.
This is your skin's answer to swelling. Deep, sore spots push your skin to make extra color, called pigment, while they heal. Deeper skin tones often hold that color longer.
Picking or squeezing a spot can make the mark darker. Sun does the same. Flat marks are not scars, since a scar is a dent or a raised bump you can feel with a finger.
When to see someone
See a doctor or a skin doctor (dermatologist) if the marks are dents, pits or raised ridges. Go as well if deep, painful lumps keep coming back, or if a spot bleeds, crusts or grows. Dark patches that show up after you start a new drug also need a check.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies linked to cystic acne. We do not say any of them will fade your marks. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, so read the grades before you try anything.
