Zeng Ye Cheng Qi Tang is a traditional Chinese herbal formula, also known as Increase the Fluids and Order the Qi Decoction. It is a single drug (TCM formula) — that is, one prescription made of several herbs used together, not a single plant. It is a short-term purgative, meaning it is given to force a bowel movement.
In classical practice it is used for a person with a fever who has become very dry — dry mouth, thirst, dark urine and hard, stuck stool. The idea is to moisten the body and clear the bowel at the same time. It was never meant as a daily fibre supplement or a long-term constipation remedy.
Evidence verdict: this is a long-standing formula in Chinese medicine, but we could not identify good human trials in the published English literature, so its effects beyond a laxative action are unproven. Long traditional use is not the same thing as proof that something works, and that distinction applies to everything on this page.
The strongest and best-understood action is simple: it makes you empty your bowels.
Two of the ingredients do that directly. Rhubarb root (Da Huang) contains anthraquinones, plant compounds that stimulate the large bowel to contract. Mirabilite (Mang Xiao) is mostly sodium sulfate, a salt that pulls water into the gut, which softens stool.
The other three herbs are described in tradition as "increasing the fluids" — moistening a dry body so the bowel can move without harsh force. That part is a traditional explanation, not a mechanism that has been measured in people. How the whole formula behaves as a combination has not been well studied.
You will meet it in a few forms:
Traditional water decoction — the raw herbs are simmered and the liquid is drunk. Mirabilite is usually stirred in at the end rather than boiled.
Granules or powdered extract — dissolved in hot water. This is the most common modern form.
Pills or capsules of concentrated extract — less common for this formula, because dosing a purgative by pill is harder to adjust.
It is normally supplied and adjusted by a trained practitioner rather than bought off a shelf, and ingredient amounts vary between suppliers.
The formula comes from the Wen Bing Tiao Bian (Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases), written by Wu Ju-tong and published in 1798. That text belongs to the "warm disease" school, a branch of Chinese medicine focused on fevers and heat illness.
It was built as a gentler option than the harsher purgative formulas of the day, for patients thought to be too dried out to tolerate a strong purge alone. It has stayed in the standard Chinese formula curriculum ever since and is still taught and prescribed today.
See a doctor if your constipation lasts more than three days, keeps coming back, or started suddenly without a clear reason.
Get medical help the same day if you have severe belly pain, vomiting, a swollen tender belly, or you cannot pass wind as well as stool. Those can mean a blocked bowel, which a laxative can make worse.
Go to A&E or call emergency services if you have an irregular or racing heartbeat, fainting, severe muscle weakness, blood in your stool, or black tarry stool. Also see a doctor promptly if your skin or eyes turn yellow, which can be a sign of liver trouble.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
