Hu Qian Wan

Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of Chinese medicine for weak legs. Evidence grade insufficient: no reliable human trials support it.

Home

What is Hu Qian Wan? Hu Qian Wan, or Hidden Tiger Pill, is an old Chinese herbal formula. It is one named recipe made of several herbs, not a single herb. People take it for legs that feel weak, thin and sore, and for a weak low back. In Chinese medicine it is used for what is called wei syndrome. That means limbs that slowly grow weak and lose bulk. The mix is aimed at older or run-down people, not at a sudden injury. Here is the plain verdict. The formula has a long record in Chinese medicine, but no sound human trials back it up. A long history of use is not proof that a thing works, and that caveat sits here once, not in every section below. One more thing to know up front. The old recipe named tiger bone. Tiger bone is illegal, and any pill that still lists it must be refused. How does Hu Qian Wan work? No one has shown how, or whether, this formula changes the body. What follows is how tradition explains it, plus what lab work hints at. Chinese medicine says the liver and kidney systems have run low and that heat has built up inside. The heavy, sweet herbs are meant to fill what is low. The bitter, cooling herbs are meant to clear the heat, and the ginger and peel keep the mix easy on the stomach. Lab and animal work has looked at single herbs from the mix, not the mix itself. Berberine, a plant chemical in phellodendron bark, can lower blood sugar and calm swelling in animals. That tells us nothing solid about weak legs in people. What forms does Hu Qian Wan come in? You will most often see it as small ready-made pills. The main forms are honey pills (large, soft and sweet), water pills (small and hard), loose powder, and a tea brewed from the raw herbs by a practitioner. Ready-made pills from abroad are not always checked well. Some Chinese patent pills have been found to hold heavy metals, hidden drugs, or the wrong plant. Buy only from a seller who can show lab testing. Where it comes from: The recipe is credited to Zhu Danxi, a famous Chinese doctor of the Yuan dynasty, and appears in his book Danxi Xin Fa in the 1300s. The name Hidden Tiger Pill points to a strong, steady tread, which is what the formula was meant to restore. It has stayed in use in Chinese medicine for roughly seven hundred years.

Helps

What does Hu Qian Wan help with? Weak, thin legs that get worse slowly (wei syndrome): This is the classic reason the formula is given, and it has been used this way for centuries. There are no trials in people that test it for this. Slowly worsening leg weakness can come from nerve, spine or muscle disease, so get it checked by a doctor first. Sore, weak low back and knees: Tradition treats the low back and knees as the same picture as weak legs, so the same pill is used. Human trial evidence is absent. Simple steps such as strength work and treating the real cause matter more. Weakness left over after a long illness: Chinese medicine uses this formula in the slow rebuilding stage, once any fever or infection has gone. No trials have tested that use. If you are still losing weight or still feverish, see a doctor rather than reaching for herbs. Night sweats and hot flushes that come with weak legs: The cooling herbs in the mix are the reason it gets used for this pattern. The evidence is traditional only. New or heavy night sweats need a medical check, because they can point to infection or other illness. Feeling of heat in the palms and soles: This symptom is part of the pattern the formula was written for, so practitioners read it as a sign the pill may fit. No human study has looked at it. Treat it as a traditional signpost, not a proven use.

Where it comes from:

The recipe is credited to Zhu Danxi, a famous Chinese doctor of the Yuan dynasty, and appears in his book Danxi Xin Fa in the 1300s. The name Hidden Tiger Pill points to a strong, steady tread, which is what the formula was meant to restore. It has stayed in use in Chinese medicine for roughly seven hundred years.

Who should avoid Hu Qian Wan?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child, because berberine can cause jaundice (yellow skin) and brain damage in newborns.
  • Never buy or take any version that lists tiger bone (hu gu) on the label, in any country; the trade is illegal and the animal is endangered.
  • Do not use if you take cyclosporine or any other anti-rejection medicine after a transplant.
  • Do not use if you take digoxin (a heart medicine) or warfarin (a blood thinner) without your doctor's approval.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease, hepatitis (swelling of the liver), or unexplained yellow skin or eyes.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease, unless your kidney doctor has seen the exact product.
  • Do not use if you have a fever or an infection right now; tradition says wait until it has passed.
  • Do not use if you have ongoing diarrhoea or a stomach that upsets easily, as the rich herbs tend to make this worse.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to any herb listed on the label.
  • Do not use if a doctor has not yet checked new or spreading leg weakness.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor now if your leg weakness is getting worse fast, spreads to your arms, or comes with numbness. Go to the emergency department if you cannot control your bladder or bowels, or if the weakness came on within hours. Stop the pills and see a doctor if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, your urine turns dark, you feel very tired, or you get a rash. Also check in with your doctor before you start, if you take any daily prescription medicine.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
