The app remembers what you have started, including Walnuts, reminds you when to take it, and records whether it helped — so the next decision is based on your own notes rather than memory.
Walnuts (Juglans regia) are one of the most nutritionally complex whole foods available, delivering a uniquely synergistic combination of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), ellagitannin polyphenols, gamma-tocopherol, plant sterols, and bioactive peptides in a single whole-food matrix. Unlike most nuts, walnuts are the only commonly consumed nut with a meaningful ALA content, providing approximately 2.5g of omega-3 per 28g serving. They have been a core dietary staple in Persian, Greek, Roman, Ayurvedic, and Traditional Chinese medicine systems for millennia.
Walnuts exert their health effects through multiple simultaneous pathways: ALA is partially converted to EPA and DHA, supporting anti-inflammatory eicosanoid production and membrane fluidity in neuronal and cardiovascular tissues. Ellagitannins are metabolized by gut bacteria into urolithins, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and mitophagy-promoting effects in human studies. Plant sterols competitively inhibit intestinal cholesterol absorption, L-arginine supports endothelial nitric oxide synthesis for vasodilation, and gamma-tocopherol provides antioxidant protection against nitrogen-based reactive species not adequately neutralized by alpha-tocopherol.
Whole raw walnut halves are the most evidence-backed form, as clinical trials consistently use whole walnuts. Walnut oil retains ALA and tocopherols but loses most polyphenols and fiber. Walnut flour retains fiber and some polyphenols but has reduced fat-soluble nutrient content. Encapsulated walnut extract concentrates specific compounds (e.g., ellagitannins) but lacks the whole-food synergy demonstrated in trials. For cardiovascular and cognitive benefits, whole raw or lightly toasted walnuts are preferred.
Walnuts have been cultivated since at least 5000 BCE in ancient Persia (modern Iran) and were traded along the Silk Road into China and India. Greek and Roman physicians including Dioscorides and Galen documented medicinal uses for walnuts, and the Doctrine of Signatures — noting the walnut's resemblance to a human brain — contributed to their historical use as a brain tonic across multiple traditions. Traditional Chinese Medicine incorporates walnut kernel (Hu Tao Ren) to tonify the kidneys and lungs and warm yang. Ayurveda uses walnut to support digestive fire and nervous system strength.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
