What is Nattokinase? Nattokinase is an enzyme produced during the fermentation of soybeans by the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto — the same process that creates the Japanese food natto. It was first identified by researcher Hiroyuki Sumi in 1980, who discovered its remarkable ability to dissolve fibrin, the protein that holds blood clots together. Unlike many supplements that support the body indirectly, nattokinase works directly on clot-forming proteins in the bloodstream. How does Nattokinase work? Nattokinase acts as a fibrinolytic enzyme, meaning it breaks down fibrin clots much like the body's own clot-dissolving system does — but more potently. It also lowers levels of fibrinogen (a clot-building protein), inhibits platelet clumping, and may help relax blood vessel walls to lower blood pressure. Think of it as a natural drain cleaner for your circulation. What forms does Nattokinase come in? Nattokinase supplements are most commonly sold as capsules or enteric-coated tablets, measured in fibrinolytic units (FU) rather than milligrams — 2,000 FU is the most researched dose. Enteric coating helps protect the enzyme from stomach acid so it reaches the small intestine intact. Whole natto food contains nattokinase but also Vitamin K2, which is important to know if you're on warfarin. Where it comes from: Natto has been a staple of Japanese cuisine for over 1,000 years , particularly in the Kanto region, and was historically valued for its cardiovascular and digestive benefits. The enzyme nattokinase was isolated in 1980 by Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi at Chicago University, who famously discovered its clot-dissolving activity by testing natto on a fibrin clot in a petri dish — the results were striking enough to spark decades of cardiovascular research.

Helps

What does Nattokinase help with? Blood clots and poor circulation: Nattokinase directly breaks down fibrin, the protein scaffold of blood clots, making it one of the few natural compounds with genuine clot-dissolving ability. It also reduces fibrinogen levels in the blood, which lowers the tendency for new clots to form in the first place. High blood pressure: Human trials have shown meaningful reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure with regular nattokinase use. It appears to work partly by inhibiting an enzyme (ACE) that constricts blood vessels, similar to how some blood pressure medications work — but through a gentler, natural pathway. Cardiovascular disease risk: By improving blood fluidity, reducing clot-forming proteins, and supporting healthy arterial function, nattokinase addresses several of the underlying drivers of heart attack and stroke risk. Some research suggests it may also slow the buildup of arterial plaque over time. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention: Nattokinase has been studied specifically for long-haul travelers at risk of DVT — the dangerous leg clots that can form during prolonged immobility. One controlled trial found it significantly reduced clot formation and leg swelling during long flights compared to placebo. High fibrinogen levels: Elevated fibrinogen is a well-recognized cardiovascular risk marker. Nattokinase has been shown in clinical studies to measurably reduce blood fibrinogen levels, effectively lowering one of the key factors that makes blood 'thick' and clot-prone. Atherosclerosis (clogged arteries): Early human research suggests nattokinase may help reduce arterial plaque — the fatty buildup inside artery walls that drives most heart attacks and strokes. Its fibrinolytic and anti-platelet actions may help keep plaques from growing or rupturing. Post-COVID clotting concerns: COVID-19 is associated with a hypercoagulable state — blood that clots more easily than normal. Nattokinase has attracted research interest as a natural fibrinolytic agent that may help manage this tendency, though clinical trials specific to post-COVID conditions are still emerging. Peripheral artery disease: By improving blood fluidity and reducing clot-building proteins, nattokinase may support better circulation to the legs and feet — areas often compromised in peripheral artery disease. This is a plausible benefit given its mechanism, though direct PAD-specific trials are limited. Varicose veins and leg swelling: Some evidence suggests nattokinase can reduce the swelling and discomfort associated with venous insufficiency and varicose veins, likely by improving blood flow and reducing fibrin deposits in and around vein walls.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A natural enzyme extracted from natto, a traditional Japanese fermented soybean dish, known for its ability to break down blood clots.
  • Main uses: Supports healthy blood flow, helps dissolve clots, and may lower blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risk.
  • Best for: Blood clot prevention, High blood pressure, Cardiovascular health
  • Active ingredients: Nattokinase enzyme (serine protease), Vitamin K2 (in whole natto food)
  • Forms: capsule, enteric-coated capsule, powder, tablet
  • Time to effect: Blood flow and clot-dissolving effects may be noticeable within 2–4 weeks; blood pressure benefits often emerge after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
  • Side effects: Generally well tolerated; the main concern is increased bleeding risk, especially if you take blood thinners.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
