Home

What is Trikatu Formula? Trikatu is one of Ayurveda's most celebrated digestive formulas, combining long pepper (Piper longum), black pepper (Piper nigrum), and dry ginger (Zingiber officinale) in equal parts. The name literally means 'three pungents' in Sanskrit, reflecting the heating and stimulating nature of all three ingredients. It has been used for over 2,000 years as a foundational formula to rekindle digestive fire (called 'agni' in Ayurveda) and prepare the body to get more from food and medicine. How does Trikatu Formula work? Trikatu's most well-researched action is dramatically improving how well your gut absorbs other compounds — piperine alone has been shown to boost the bioavailability of nutrients and drugs by slowing down their breakdown in the gut wall and liver. Ginger adds its own layer of digestive support by stimulating digestive enzymes, reducing nausea, and keeping food moving through the gut at a healthy pace. Together, the three ingredients also have mild anti-inflammatory and metabolism-supporting effects that make the formula more than the sum of its parts. What forms does Trikatu Formula come in? Traditional Ayurvedic practice uses Trikatu as a fine powder (churna) mixed with honey or warm water before meals. Modern versions come in capsules or tablets for convenience, with standardized piperine content often listed on the label. Liquid extracts are less common but available. For absorption enhancement of other supplements, standardized piperine (Bioperine) products deliver a consistent dose. Where it comes from: Trikatu appears in foundational Ayurvedic texts including the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, where it is prescribed to treat indigestion, respiratory congestion, low metabolism, and as a carrier formula to enhance the action of other medicines. Its use spans over 2,000 years across South Asian traditional medicine, and it remains one of the most commonly used classical Ayurvedic formulas today.

Helps

What does Trikatu Formula help with? Bloating and gas: Trikatu helps relax the gut and stimulates digestive enzyme output, which means food gets broken down more completely and is less likely to ferment and cause gas. The warming spices also help move stagnant food through the digestive tract more efficiently. Slow or sluggish digestion: In Ayurveda, poor digestion is the root of most illness, and Trikatu is the go-to formula for reigniting it. Clinically, its ingredients stimulate gastric secretions and digestive motility, helping your gut process meals more efficiently. Poor nutrient absorption: Piperine in Trikatu is one of the most studied natural bioavailability enhancers — it slows the liver and gut wall enzymes that break down nutrients before they enter the bloodstream, meaning you actually absorb more of what you eat and supplement with. Nausea and upset stomach: Ginger, a key component of Trikatu, has robust clinical evidence for reducing nausea — particularly pregnancy-related nausea and post-surgical nausea. The combination also helps soothe stomach discomfort from indigestion. Low metabolism and weight management: Piperine has been shown to interfere with the formation of new fat cells, and ginger supports thermogenesis (your body's heat-generating metabolism). Together, Trikatu may provide mild but meaningful metabolic support alongside a healthy diet. Respiratory congestion and mucus: Ayurvedic tradition has long used Trikatu for chest congestion and coughs, and the pungent compounds in all three ingredients do have known mucus-thinning and mild broncho-relaxing properties that support clearer breathing. High cholesterol and blood fats: Human studies on ginger and piperine individually suggest both can modestly reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Trikatu as a combined formula may offer additive lipid-lowering benefit, though direct formula trials are limited. Blood sugar management: Ginger has shown meaningful blood sugar-lowering effects in clinical trials in people with type 2 diabetes. Piperine may also improve insulin sensitivity. Trikatu may support healthier blood sugar balance, particularly after meals. Low appetite: The warming, pungent nature of Trikatu gently stimulates gastric acid and digestive juices, which naturally improves appetite — particularly in people with digestive weakness, illness recovery, or elderly individuals with reduced appetite. General fatigue and low energy: By improving how well nutrients are absorbed from food and supplements, Trikatu may indirectly reduce fatigue tied to nutritional insufficiency. Its metabolic-stimulating effects also support more sustained energy across the day.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
