Shen Jin Cao

Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of Chinese herbal medicine for stiff joints. Evidence grade insufficient: no published human trial tests this

Home

What is Shen Jin Cao? Shen Jin Cao is a dried whole plant used in Chinese herbal medicine. It is a club moss. It is a single herb, not a blend of several. Herbalists give it for stiff, sore joints and tight, cramping muscles. The name means "stretch the sinews herb." It is usually boiled into a tea, or used in a warm soak for a sore limb. Long use is not the same as proof. No human trial has tested this herb on its own. Treat it as a traditional remedy with an unproven effect, and read the safety notes below before you try it. How does Shen Jin Cao work? No one has shown how Shen Jin Cao acts in the human body. In Chinese medicine, it is said to drive "wind and damp" out of the joints. It is also said to free the sinews, so a stiff limb bends more easily. Those are ideas from an old system, not lab findings. Lab tests show the plant holds alkaloids, which are strong plant chemicals. Some of them change nerve signals in test tubes and in animals. That is a long way from proof of a real effect in people. What forms does Shen Jin Cao come in? Most often you meet it as the dried, chopped whole plant. A herbalist boils this with other herbs into a tea, called a decoction. It is also sold as a powder, in pills, and in tinctures (alcohol extracts). Some shops sell herb packs for soaking a sore arm or leg. Spore powder from club moss is a different product. Do not breathe it in, as fine spores can settle in the lungs. Where it comes from: Shen Jin Cao has been used in China for centuries. Old herb books group it with the "wind-damp" herbs, which are given for stiff, painful limbs. Club moss also has folk use in Europe and India. Its main standing, though, is in Chinese practice, where it is a steady, everyday herb for joint and muscle pain. It is a supporting herb rather than a famous one. It nearly always appears inside a formula with several other herbs.

Helps

What does Shen Jin Cao help with? Joint pain and stiffness: This is the main traditional use. Herbalists put it in formulas for aching, stiff joints that feel worse in cold, wet weather. No human trial has tested whether it helps. Muscle cramps and tight tendons: The herb's name points at this use: loosening tight sinews. Tradition is clear here, but there is no trial evidence behind it. Low back and leg pain: Old formulas often pair it with herbs for the lower back. Any benefit is unproven, and back pain has many causes that need a proper check. Bruises and sprains (used as a soak or wash): The boiled herb is sometimes used as a warm soak for a knock or sprain. This use rests on tradition alone. See a doctor if the limb is very swollen or you cannot use it. Numbness or heaviness in the limbs: Traditional texts list this. New numbness can signal a nerve or blood-flow problem, so get it checked by a doctor first.

Stop the herb and call a doctor the same day if you feel very sick, throw up again and again, sweat heavily, or notice your heartbeat is slow or uneven.

Get emergency help straight away for a fit (seizure), fainting, trouble breathing, or muscle twitching you cannot control.

Also book a normal appointment if your joint pain is getting worse, a joint is hot and swollen, or you have new numbness or weakness in a limb. These need a proper diagnosis, not a home remedy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
