Norotong is the dried, spiky fruit ball of the Formosan sweetgum tree. Korean and Chinese herbalists boil it into a tea for stiff, sore joints and a blocked nose. It is nearly always one herb in a mixed formula, not a stand-alone pill.
Here is the short verdict. Norotong has a long record in East Asian herb books, but we found no human trials of it on its own. A long history of use is not proof that a herb works.
This page sets out what tradition claims, what lab work shows, and who must stay away from it. Norotong is not a cure for any illness. Ask your doctor before you add it to medicine you already take.
No one has shown how norotong works in the body. In Korean medicine it is said to open the channels. That is an old way of saying it moves stuck blood and fluid, and so eases pain and swelling.
Lab tests on the fruit and its oil show some anti-swelling action in cells and in mice. Work in cells and animals often does not carry over to people. So treat any story about how it works as unproven.
You will most often meet norotong as whole or sliced dried fruit balls, sold by weight. These are simmered in water for 20 to 30 minutes to make a tea, called a decoction.
Some shops sell it as a powder or as instant granules that you stir into hot water. It also turns up as one named herb inside ready-made Korean and Chinese patent formulas.
Do not mix it up with storax, the sticky resin from a related sweetgum tree. That is a different product with different uses.
Norotong takes its name from the idea that it travels down every road in the body. Chinese herb books listed it by the 1700s, and Korean herbalists took it into their own practice.
In both traditions it is a helper herb rather than a headline one. It is added to formulas for aching joints, blocked noses and slow milk flow after birth.
See a doctor if joint pain, swelling or a blocked nose lasts more than two weeks, or gets worse while you take it. Get medical help the same day if you bruise easily, bleed from the nose or gums, or pass black or bloody stools. Get emergency help at once if your lips, tongue or throat swell, if a rash spreads fast, or if you struggle to breathe. Swelling in the legs or belly needs a doctor's check, because it can come from the heart, liver or kidneys.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
