Song Jie is the hard, resin-soaked knotty wood taken from the branch joints of pine trees, and it is best known in Chinese medicine as a remedy for aching, stiff joints. It is a single herb, not a mixed formula. Its common English name is Pine Knot.
Traditional practitioners reach for it when joint and muscle pain feels worse in cold or damp weather, and when movement is stiff. It is most often soaked in rice wine or simmered into a decoction (a strong tea made by boiling the herb). It is also used on the outside of the body as a wash or soak.
Here is the honest evidence picture. Song Jie has a long record inside one tradition, Chinese herbal medicine, but long use is not proof that something works. We could not find any published human trials of Song Jie on its own, so its effects and risks in people have not been properly measured.
Nobody has shown how Song Jie works in the human body, so what follows is theory, not fact.
In traditional Chinese terms, Song Jie is described as warm, bitter and pungent. It is said to 'dispel wind-damp' and to free up blocked channels, which is the old way of describing pain and stiffness that settles in the joints.
In modern chemical terms, pine knot wood is rich in volatile oils and resin acids. Laboratory work on these compounds suggests they can irritate tissue and may act on inflammation pathways. That is test-tube and animal work only, and it does not tell you what a dose does in a person with arthritis.
When the herb is soaked in wine, some of the effect a person feels may simply come from the alcohol, which is a well-known short-term pain dulling agent. This is worth keeping in mind before crediting the herb itself.
Song Jie is sold as dried wood chips or shavings, usually by weight rather than as capsules. This is a herb handled by practitioners more than by shoppers.
The common preparations are a decoction, where the chips are simmered in water, and a medicinal wine, where they are steeped in rice wine or spirits for weeks. External soaks and washes made from the decoction are also traditional.
Avoid pine turpentine oil entirely as an internal remedy. It is a concentrated distillate, not the same thing as the herb, and swallowing it can damage the kidneys and nervous system.
Song Jie appears in classical Chinese materia medica texts and has been used for centuries for 'bi syndrome', the traditional name for painful, stiff, weather-sensitive joints. Pine-knot wines are a well-documented folk preparation in China. Outside East Asia it has almost no traditional record, and resinous pine preparations elsewhere were used mainly on the skin or as fumigants.
Stop taking it and see a doctor if you get pain in your side or lower back, pass much less urine than usual, or notice blood in your urine. These can be signs of kidney trouble.
See a doctor the same day if you have a fit, feel confused, or cannot stop vomiting. Call emergency services if someone has swallowed turpentine or pine essential oil.
Book a normal appointment if a joint is hot, red and swollen, if pain wakes you at night, or if your pain has not improved after three weeks.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
