Seojanggyeong is a single herb used in Korean medicine. It is the dried root and root stalk of the plant Cynanchum paniculatum. In English it is called paniculate swallowwort root.
Healers have long used it for pain. Folk use covers sore joints, belly pain, toothache and itchy skin. It was also laid on the skin after snake and insect bites.
The proof in people is thin. Nearly all of the research so far is lab and animal work. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a herb works, so read what follows with that in mind.
No one has shown how it works in people. The best guess comes from lab dishes and animal tests.
Its best known active part is paeonol. In animals, paeonol eased pain and calmed swelling (puffiness and heat in body tissue). It also seemed to quiet some immune cells that drive itching.
Other lab work hints at a mild calming effect on the body. None of this has been shown in people. Treat the whole picture as a theory, not a fact.
You will most often see the dried, sliced root. It is boiled in water to make a tea, called a decoction. Powders, pills and alcohol extracts (tinctures) are also sold.
It is used on the skin too. Folk healers soaked the root in wine, or crushed it fresh, and put it on bites and rashes.
In Korean practice it is rarely used alone. It is usually one herb in a mixed formula.
Use of this root goes back about two thousand years in East Asian medicine. Old Chinese texts list it as xu chang qing.
Korean doctors took it up and used it for pain, itch and bites. It still appears in Korean and Chinese herb books today.
See a doctor if your pain, rash or belly cramps do not settle within two weeks, or if they get worse. Get help the same day if you have yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, a fast or uneven heartbeat, fainting, or ongoing vomiting. Call emergency services at once for a snake bite, or if you get a swollen face or lips, a spreading rash, or trouble breathing after taking it.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
