What is San Qi (Tienchi Ginseng)? San Qi — meaning 'three-seven' in Chinese, reflecting the plant's distinctive leaf and stem structure — is the root of Panax notoginseng, a close botanical relative of Asian ginseng. Cultivated primarily in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces of China, it has been called the 'miracle root for the preservation of life' in classical Chinese medical texts. It sits at the heart of the famous patent formula Yunnan Baiyao, used historically by soldiers to control battlefield wounds. How does San Qi (Tienchi Ginseng) work? San Qi works through several overlapping pathways: it helps blood clot properly when there is bleeding, while also gently thinning the blood and widening blood vessels to improve overall circulation — a dual action that makes it uniquely useful in Chinese medicine. Its active compounds, particularly the notoginsenosides and ginsenosides, support the heart muscle, reduce inflammation in blood vessel walls, and help the body manage cholesterol and blood fats. It also has a mild pain-relieving effect that traditional practitioners have used for centuries to address bruising and traumatic injury. What forms does San Qi (Tienchi Ginseng) come in? San Qi is most commonly taken as a standardized extract capsule or as a finely ground powder mixed into warm water. Raw root slices can be simmered into tea or decoctions. For wound healing and bruising, powdered San Qi is sometimes applied topically. Yunnan Baiyao is the most widely recognized patent formula containing San Qi as its primary ingredient. Where it comes from: San Qi was first formally documented in Li Shizhen's landmark Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu) in 1578, where it was praised as the most important herb for treating blood disorders and traumatic injury. It became a staple of Chinese military medicine and remains one of the highest-value medicinal herbs grown in Yunnan province today.

Helps

What does San Qi (Tienchi Ginseng) help with? Heart health and angina: San Qi has a long track record in Chinese cardiology for reducing chest pain from poor coronary circulation. Its compounds help relax blood vessels, improve blood flow to the heart muscle, and protect heart tissue from damage — making it a go-to herb in integrative cardiac care. High cholesterol and triglycerides: Regular use of San Qi appears to lower LDL ('bad') cholesterol and triglycerides while nudging HDL ('good') cholesterol upward. It seems to work by influencing how the body processes fats in the liver and bloodstream. Bleeding and wound healing: This is San Qi's most famous traditional use — stopping bleeding quickly, whether from cuts, surgery, heavy periods, or internal bleeding. It activates the body's clotting mechanisms locally while also supporting tissue repair, which is why it's the star ingredient in Yunnan Baiyao. Bruising and traumatic injury: Traditional Chinese medicine has used San Qi for centuries to reduce pain, swelling, and bruising after injuries. It improves local circulation, helping the body clear pooled blood from bruised tissue faster and easing soreness. High blood pressure: San Qi's compounds help relax the walls of blood vessels, which can gently lower blood pressure over time. It's often combined with other herbs in Chinese medicine formulas targeting hypertension. Poor circulation: By widening blood vessels and making blood flow more smoothly, San Qi supports circulation throughout the body. This is especially relevant for people with cold hands and feet, numbness, or early vascular disease. Stroke recovery support: San Qi is used in Chinese hospital settings as part of post-stroke care. It may help improve blood flow to the brain, reduce residual clot formation, and support neurological recovery, though it is always used alongside conventional care in these settings. Liver health and fatty liver: Emerging research suggests San Qi can help protect liver cells from damage, reduce liver inflammation, and slow the buildup of fat in liver tissue. Traditional practitioners have used it for liver-related conditions for generations. Pain and swelling: San Qi has real anti-inflammatory properties that make it useful for reducing swelling and pain — both internally and, when applied as a powder, on the skin over an injured area. Diabetes management: Some research suggests San Qi may help improve how the body responds to insulin and supports healthier blood sugar levels, though this area is still being studied and it is used as a complement to, not a replacement for, diabetes care.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
