What is [RETIRED] Castor Oil Pack (Liver)? A castor oil pack is a simple, time-honored therapy where a piece of natural cloth — traditionally wool or cotton flannel — is saturated with cold-pressed castor oil and placed over the right side of the abdomen, directly over the liver. Heat is often applied on top using a hot water bottle or heating pad to help the oil absorb and enhance circulation to the area. It's one of the most widely used therapies in naturopathic medicine for supporting liver and digestive health. How does [RETIRED] Castor Oil Pack (Liver) work? Castor oil's main active compound, ricinoleic acid, is absorbed through the skin and appears to stimulate local circulation and lymphatic drainage in the abdominal region. The warmth from the pack dilates blood vessels, encouraging blood flow to the liver and surrounding tissues. Together, these effects are thought to support the liver's natural detox processes, ease congestion in the bile ducts, calm gut inflammation, and promote the movement of lymphatic fluid that carries waste away from tissues. What forms does [RETIRED] Castor Oil Pack (Liver) come in? The classic preparation uses undyed wool or organic cotton flannel folded into several layers and soaked (not dripping) with cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil. Ready-made castor oil pack wraps with built-in compression bands are now widely available and easier to use for daily sessions. Quality of the oil matters — always choose cold-pressed, organic castor oil in a glass bottle for topical use. Where it comes from: Castor oil has been used medicinally for at least 4,000 years — documented in the Ebers Papyrus of ancient Egypt for digestive and skin complaints. In Ayurveda, it is called Eranda and has been used for liver, joint, and reproductive conditions for centuries. The specific liver pack protocol gained wide popularity in Western naturopathy through the health readings of Edgar Cayce in the early 1900s, and has since been incorporated into evidence-informed naturopathic practice as a gentle, low-risk supportive therapy.

Helps

What does [RETIRED] Castor Oil Pack (Liver) help with? Liver and gallbladder support: Applied over the liver, the pack is thought to improve local blood and lymphatic circulation, helping the liver process and clear metabolic waste, hormones, and environmental toxins more efficiently. Many naturopathic practitioners use it as part of liver cleanse protocols, particularly when bile flow feels sluggish. Bloating and sluggish digestion: Ricinoleic acid gently stimulates smooth muscle movement in the gut and bile ducts, which can help move stagnant gas and improve bile release — two common drivers of after-meal bloating. Regular use often leads to noticeably easier digestion within a few weeks. Constipation: Even when applied topically rather than taken orally, castor oil packs appear to gently encourage bowel motility through transdermal absorption and nerve stimulation in the abdomen. They're a milder alternative to oral castor oil for people dealing with chronic, low-grade constipation. Hormonal imbalance and estrogen clearance: The liver is the primary organ responsible for breaking down and clearing used hormones, including estrogen. By supporting liver detox pathways and bile flow, castor oil packs may help the body clear excess estrogen more effectively — which can benefit conditions like PMS, fibroids, and hormonal acne. Lymphatic congestion: The abdominal region houses a large portion of the body's lymphatic system, including the cisterna chyli. Castor oil packs are believed to stimulate lymphatic movement in this area, helping clear cellular waste and reduce the puffiness or heaviness that comes with lymphatic sluggishness. PMS and pelvic pain: When placed over the lower abdomen, castor oil packs have a well-documented muscle-relaxing and anti-inflammatory effect on smooth muscle tissue, which can ease uterine cramping and pelvic tension. Many women use them in the week before their period to reduce cramp intensity. Fatty liver (non-alcoholic): Some naturopathic clinicians use castor oil packs as part of a broader NAFLD management plan, theorizing that improved liver circulation and bile flow may support fat metabolism in the liver. This is a supportive therapy used alongside dietary change, not a standalone treatment. Stress and nervous system overload: The warmth and the physical act of lying still with a pack for 45–60 minutes activates the parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system, reducing cortisol and muscle tension. Many users report this as one of the most immediate and noticeable effects — a deep sense of calm during and after the session. Inflammation and abdominal discomfort: Ricinoleic acid has been shown to reduce inflammation through prostaglandin receptor activity, and this effect may extend to abdominal tissues when the oil penetrates transdermally. People with IBS, inflammatory bowel conditions, or general abdominal tightness often find the pack soothing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
