What is Pomegranate Peel Extract? Pomegranate peel extract comes from the thick outer rind of the pomegranate fruit — the part most people throw away — which actually contains a much higher concentration of beneficial plant compounds than the juice or seeds. It has been used for thousands of years in Persian, Ayurvedic, and Chinese medicine to treat digestive problems, infections, and skin conditions. Today, standardized extracts make it easy to get a consistent dose of its key compounds. How does Pomegranate Peel Extract work? The peel's polyphenols — especially punicalagins and ellagic acid — act as powerful antioxidants and inflammation regulators, helping to calm overactive immune responses and protect cells from damage. These compounds are also converted in the gut by friendly bacteria into urolithins, which have their own anti-inflammatory effects and may support muscle and metabolic health. The extract also has natural antimicrobial properties that can help keep harmful gut bacteria and skin pathogens in check. What forms does Pomegranate Peel Extract come in? Capsules and standardized powders are the most practical forms for consistent dosing. Topical creams and gels containing the extract are used directly on skin for wound healing or inflammatory skin conditions. Traditional decoctions (boiled peel tea) are still used in many cultures but offer less predictable polyphenol content. Standardized extracts labeled for ellagic acid percentage give the most reliable results. Where it comes from: Pomegranate peel has been used medicinally for over 3,000 years . Ancient Persian and Egyptian physicians used it to treat diarrhea, intestinal parasites, and oral infections. Ayurvedic medicine (India) incorporated it into formulas for digestive disorders and skin disease under the name 'Dadima.' Traditional Chinese Medicine used it to stop bleeding and treat dysentery. Its modern resurgence is driven by scientific interest in its exceptionally high polyphenol content.

Helps

What does Pomegranate Peel Extract help with? Gut health and diarrhea: Pomegranate peel has a long track record for calming diarrhea and digestive upset, and modern research supports it. Its tannins help tighten the gut lining and reduce excess fluid secretion, while its antimicrobial compounds discourage harmful gut bacteria from taking over. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD / IBS): The extract's polyphenols help reduce intestinal inflammation by calming inflammatory signals in the gut lining. Some research shows it may help people with ulcerative colitis experience fewer flare-ups and less gut permeability ('leaky gut'). Skin inflammation and wound healing: Applied topically, pomegranate peel extract speeds up skin repair by encouraging new cell growth and reducing inflammation at wound sites. It also acts as a natural antimicrobial barrier, helping to prevent infection during healing. High blood sugar and insulin resistance: Studies show the extract can help lower fasting blood sugar and improve how the body responds to insulin. Its polyphenols appear to slow carbohydrate breakdown in the gut and support better glucose uptake by cells. High cholesterol and heart health: Pomegranate peel extract has been shown to lower LDL ('bad') cholesterol and triglycerides while protecting LDL from oxidative damage — the type of damage that leads to plaque buildup in arteries. It may also gently lower blood pressure over time. Oral health and gum disease: Used as a mouth rinse or in toothpaste, the extract effectively reduces the bacteria responsible for plaque, gingivitis, and gum inflammation. Clinical trials show it can rival chlorhexidine rinse for reducing gum bleeding and inflammation. Bacterial and fungal infections: The extract shows broad antimicrobial activity against common pathogens including E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Candida species. This makes it useful both internally (gut infections) and externally (skin and oral infections). Oxidative stress and inflammation: Pomegranate peel has one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any plant extract tested. Taking it regularly helps reduce markers of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, which are linked to aging and most chronic diseases. Skin aging and UV damage: Both topical and oral use of the extract help protect skin cells from UV-induced damage and reduce the breakdown of collagen. Over time, users report improvements in skin texture, elasticity, and pigmentation.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
