What is Silver Cluster-leaf? Silver Cluster-leaf (Terminalia sericea) is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to the woodlands and savannas of southern Africa. Its distinctive silver-grey leaves, arranged in clusters at branch tips, make it easy to recognize across the bushveld. The bark and roots are the primary medicinal parts, and the tree is one of the most widely used medicinal plants in the region. How does Silver Cluster-leaf work? The bark and roots contain a rich mix of tannins, triterpene acids, and polyphenols — including compounds like arjunolic acid and resveratrol — that work together to fight harmful bacteria and fungi, calm inflammation, and help tissues repair. The tannins create a protective, astringent effect in the gut that helps settle diarrhea, while the triterpenoids appear to support how the body handles blood sugar by influencing glucose uptake pathways. What forms does Silver Cluster-leaf come in? Traditional healers most commonly prepare a decoction by boiling bark pieces or root chips in water to make a medicinal tea, which is taken orally for gut and metabolic conditions or applied topically to wounds. Modern preparations include standardized bark extract capsules and tinctures, though these are not yet widely commercially available outside of southern Africa. Where it comes from: Terminalia sericea has been a cornerstone of traditional healing systems across southern Africa for centuries. Zulu, Shona, Tswana, Ndebele, and other peoples have used it to treat diarrhea, dysentery, pneumonia, diabetes, and infected wounds. Its use is documented in multiple ethnobotanical surveys across the region, and it is listed in South African traditional medicine references as one of the most frequently traded medicinal tree species.

Helps

What does Silver Cluster-leaf help with? Diarrhea and gut infections: Silver Cluster-leaf bark is one of the most used traditional remedies for diarrhea across southern Africa. Its high tannin content tightens and soothes the gut lining, while its antimicrobial compounds help knock out the bacteria commonly behind gut infections. This combination of calming and infection-fighting makes it particularly valued for infectious diarrhea. Blood sugar balance (type 2 diabetes support): Both traditional use and laboratory research suggest that bark extracts help improve how the body uses insulin and manages blood sugar after meals. The triterpene and flavonoid compounds appear to slow sugar absorption and improve glucose uptake by cells. This has made it one of the most studied southern African plants for diabetes support. Bacterial and fungal infections: Lab studies have consistently shown that bark and root extracts can inhibit a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including some antibiotic-resistant strains. Traditional healers apply it both internally and topically for infections. The antimicrobial activity is attributed to the synergy between its tannins, triterpenes, and phenolic compounds. Wound healing and skin repair: Applied as a poultice or wash, the bark decoction has a long history of use for cleaning infected wounds, sores, and skin conditions. The astringent tannins help close and protect tissue, while the antimicrobial compounds reduce infection risk. Some research supports improved wound closure and reduced bacterial load in topical applications. Stomach pain and digestive cramping: The bark tea is traditionally taken for stomach cramps, bloating, and general digestive discomfort. The anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties of its flavonoid content help relax the gut and reduce the pain associated with infections or irritation. Inflammation and joint pain: The triterpenoids and flavonoids in Silver Cluster-leaf have demonstrated meaningful anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting some of the same chemical messengers involved in joint and tissue inflammation. Traditionally it is used for pain and swelling, and the anti-inflammatory mechanism is well-supported at the laboratory level. Respiratory infections (cough, pneumonia support): Across multiple southern African traditions, bark decoctions are used to treat coughs, chest infections, and pneumonia-like illnesses. The antimicrobial compounds target respiratory bacteria, while the anti-inflammatory action helps soothe inflamed airways. This remains a traditional use with supporting in vitro evidence but limited clinical trial data. Malaria (traditional adjunct use): In parts of Zimbabwe and surrounding countries, Silver Cluster-leaf has been used as part of traditional malaria treatment, though it is not a replacement for standard antimalarial therapy. Some laboratory research has found activity against Plasmodium strains, lending biological plausibility to this traditional use, though human clinical evidence is lacking.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
