Oleum animale

Recognised but minor traditional homeopathic remedy; no human trial evidence supports it, and homeopathy overall performs no better than placebo.

Home

What is Oleum animale? Oleum animale is a homeopathic remedy for nerve pain and one-sided headaches. Homeopaths also give it for tight or wheezy breathing. A third use is a runny nose with sneezing. The remedy is made from Dippel's animal oil. That is a dark oil distilled from animal bones. Oleum animale is a minor remedy, used far less often than staples such as Arnica or Nux vomica. Like all homeopathic products, it is made by repeated dilution and shaking. At the usual strength of 30C, almost none of the starting oil is left. What you swallow is sugar, water or alcohol that carries the label of the oil. The honest evidence position is simple. No human trials of Oleum animale have been published for any condition. Trials of homeopathy as a whole show no effect beyond placebo (a dummy treatment). The remedy does have a real place in homeopathic prescribing. But traditional use is not proof that something works. How does Oleum animale work? Homeopathy rests on two ideas. Lab science has not confirmed either one. The first idea is "like cures like". A substance that causes symptoms in a well person is given in tiny amounts. It goes to a sick person with similar symptoms. The second idea is "potentisation". This is the belief that diluting and shaking make a remedy act more strongly, not more weakly. That runs against what chemistry and drug science say about dose. At 30C no source material can be measured. So there is no known chemical way for the remedy to act on your body. People do report feeling better. Three things best explain that: - the placebo effect - natural recovery over time - the long, caring talk that comes with homeopathic care What forms does Oleum animale come in? Oleum animale comes in the usual homeopathic forms: - sugar pellets or pillules, melted under the tongue - liquid dilutions in a water and alcohol base, taken as drops - now and then, a liquid used at a pharmacy to wet pellets Strengths carry a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more dilution steps. It does not mean a stronger dose in any chemical sense. Low strengths such as 3X or 6X are rare for this remedy. If you ever see a mother tincture or a very low dilution, take real care. The crude oil is toxic. Where it comes from: Dippel's animal oil is named after Johann Konrad Dippel. He was a German alchemist and doctor of the early 1700s. He distilled the oil from bones. In his day it was sold as a cure-all. Later it was used as an industrial chemical and as an animal repellent. It entered homeopathic practice in the 1800s through provings. In a proving, healthy people take a substance and write down their symptoms. Those records placed it among remedies for nerve pain and head pain. It has stayed a small remedy, used now and then, ever since. It has never been a first-line choice.

Helps

What does Oleum animale help with? Neuralgia (sharp nerve pain, often in the face or scalp): This is the use homeopathic texts name most often for Oleum animale, especially for stabbing pain that shifts about. No human trial has tested it for nerve pain. If you have new, severe or one-sided facial pain, get a medical assessment rather than self-treating. One-sided headache or migraine-type head pain: Old proving records describe pressing pain on one side of the head with a heavy, dull feeling. There is no trial evidence supporting the remedy for headache or migraine. Headaches have many causes, and effective conventional treatments exist. Hay fever and runny nose with sneezing: Homeopathic repertories list it as a lesser option for a watery nose with repeated sneezing. Trials of homeopathy in hay fever have given mixed and mostly unconvincing results, and none has tested this remedy specifically. Asthma-like tight or wheezy breathing: Some texts mention chest tightness and breathlessness in the remedy picture. There is no evidence it helps asthma. Asthma can be life-threatening, so never replace an inhaler or a prescribed controller medicine with this remedy. Low back and hip pain: Proving notes describe aching in the lower back and down the legs. This is traditional prescribing detail, not tested benefit. Back pain that comes with numbness, weakness or bladder problems needs urgent medical review. Wind and bloating with stomach discomfort: Bloating with rumbling and cramping appears in the old symptom lists. No human study has looked at this remedy for digestive complaints. Ordinary measures and a doctor's assessment for persistent symptoms are the sensible route.

Three things best explain that: - the placebo effect - natural recovery over time - the long, caring talk that comes with homeopathic care

What forms does Oleum animale come in?

Oleum animale comes in the usual homeopathic forms: - sugar pellets or pillules, melted under the tongue - liquid dilutions in a water and alcohol base, taken as drops - now and then, a liquid used at a pharmacy to wet pellets

Strengths carry a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more dilution steps. It does not mean a stronger dose in any chemical sense.

Low strengths such as 3X or 6X are rare for this remedy. If you ever see a mother tincture or a very low dilution, take real care. The crude oil is toxic.

Where it comes from:

Dippel's animal oil is named after Johann Konrad Dippel.

Who should avoid Oleum animale?

  • Never swallow crude Dippel's animal oil, a mother tincture or a very low dilution of it; the raw distillate is toxic and is not the same thing as a homeopathic pellet
  • Do not use it in place of an inhaler or other prescribed medicine for asthma or any breathing problem
  • Do not use it instead of seeing a doctor for new, severe or one-sided facial or head pain
  • Do not give the alcohol-based liquid drops to babies or young children; use pellets if a homeopath has advised the remedy
  • Do not take the alcohol-based liquid if you are taking disulfiram or metronidazole, are pregnant, or are avoiding alcohol for any reason
  • Do not use the lactose (milk sugar) pellets if you have a diagnosed milk protein allergy, and be cautious if you are strongly lactose intolerant
  • Do not stop or reduce any prescribed medicine in order to try this remedy

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor promptly if your symptoms are getting worse, or if they have not settled within a week. Get urgent care if you have sudden severe headache, a headache with fever, a stiff neck, confusion, weakness, slurred speech or a change in vision. Also seek urgent help for breathlessness, wheezing that does not ease with your inhaler, chest pain, or back pain with numbness, leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control. If anyone swallows crude Dippel's animal oil, call emergency services or a poison centre straight away.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
